Saint George: Life, Martyrdom, and Prayers

George of Lydda, also known as Saint George, is famous for slaying a dragon. He serves as an allegory in the Christian faith of good triumphing over evil. Saint George died a martyr in the 4th century for refusing to offer a sacrifice to the pagan gods. He is therefore an example of courage and faith in the face of pagan barbarism. Saint George is, among other things, the patron saint of horsemen, the Scouting movement, and gunsmiths. He is honored on April 23 (or November 3, the day of the transfer of his relics).

Biography of Saint George

Saint George is believed to have been born between 275 and 280 in Mazaca (now Caesarea in Turkey) in Cappadocia, which was part of the Roman Empire. The primary source on the life of George of Lydda is the Passio sancti Georgii by Pasicrates (though Pope Damasus I, in his Decretum Gelasianum of 496, classified it as an apocryphal work).

According to this work, Saint George was born into a Greek Christian noble family. His father was a soldier who had come to Cappadocia to serve in the Roman army. Saint George was very frail at birth. His father had him baptized immediately. The child survived. Unfortunately, George’s father died on the battlefield when George was only ten years old. George and his mother then returned to Judea, where she was from. At the age of fifteen, he became an officer in the Roman army in Nicomedia. There he met Emperor Diocletian and introduced himself as the son of one of the emperor’s former comrades-in-arms and friends. The emperor recognized him and made him a knight and commander of his personal guard. George then became a tribune and was entrusted with military command over Syria, Palestine, Egypt, and Libya. His skill and wisdom brought him renown.

Unfortunately, these peaceful times came to an end when, on February 24, 303, the emperor issued an edict ordering the destruction of Christian churches and the persecution of Christians. Saint George tried to dissuade Diocletian, but to no avail. He then handed over his sword as a sign of resignation. After that, and following his mother’s death, George wished to make a pilgrimage to the Holy Land, to the sites of Christ’s Passion. He had to abandon this plan as the persecutions intensified. While passing through Lydda, George heard about a band of Persian marauders terrorizing the region, led by a man named Nahfr, whose name means “dragon.” He promised the local people he would defeat them, on the sole condition that all the inhabitants convert to the Christian faith. The people agreed. Saint George then slew the dragon with a single stroke of his sword and captured the rest of the band. Peace was restored to the region.

The future saint then returned to Nicomedia. There, he sold all his possessions, giving the proceeds to the poor and to persecuted Christians, and he visited the prisoners. Emperor Diocletian then ordered him to offer a sacrifice to the pagan gods and to renounce his faith in God. Saint George categorically refused and even professed his faith in Jesus. He was immediately arrested. He endured excruciating torture: he was cut in half, thrown into a well, and burned in a bronze bull… But he miraculously survived each time. These miraculous resurrections led to numerous conversions, particularly within the army. Saint George gave his soul to God on April 23, 303. The faithful secretly recovered his remains and buried him in Lydda. Later, a church was built on that site in his honor.
