Saint Samson: Life, Episcopate, and Prayers

Saint Samson was  the bishop of Dol in the 5th century, after founding an abbey in that city. He is one of the seven founding saints of Brittany. Dol is thus part of the pilgrimage route of the seven saints of Brittany, known as the Tro Breizh. Saint Samson is the patron saint of Dol-de-Bretagne, as well as of sailors and navigators, and a co-patron saint of Brittany. His feast day is July 28.

Biography of Saint Samson of Dol

Saint Samson was born around 495 in the county of Glamorgan, in Wales. He was the eldest of seven children—six boys and one girl. His parents were nobles from different Welsh counties. As a child, he was sent to the monastery of Llanilltud Fawr (now Llantwit Major, near Cardiff) to be raised as a child of God. There, he was a student of Saint Illtud. A few years later, he was ordained a deacon and then a priest by Dubricius, the Bishop of Llandaff. Saint Samson then entered the monastery of Ynys Byr (now known as Caldey Abbey), where he became abbot in 521. His reputation grew thanks to his kindness, charity, and holiness. Furthermore, his sister followed him in his choice of life and also entered the convent.

Saint Samson gradually felt drawn to the hermit’s life. He then followed some Irishmen and left his homeland for theirs. He joined the monastery of Dun Etair. He later returned to Wales to accept the office of bishop, thus becoming an abbot-bishop. However, still eager to live as a hermit, he eventually resigned from his post and took refuge in the monastery of Saint Kew in Cornwall.

Like other Breton saints from Celtic lands, Saint Samson crossed the English Channel. He traveled throughout Brittany to support his compatriots and evangelize the people. Thus, he settled in a place that would become the town of Dol-de-Bretagne. There he founded a monastery around 530 (or 540). He had already established two other monasteries in Carfantin and Lanmeur. The Frankish king Childebert I granted him a tract of land on which he founded the Abbey of Pental (in what is now the town of Saint-Samson-de-la-Roque, in the Eure department). He was renowned for his Christian virtues on both sides of the English Channel.

Saint Samson gave his soul to God around 565, probably on July 28, in Dol-de-Bretagne. He was buried in his monastery in Dol. His remains have since been moved to the city’s cathedral.

His cult spread very quickly, and many towns, churches, and chapels in Brittany bear his name. It even spread to Normandy, the Eure department, the Val-d’Oise department, and as far as Jersey and Guernsey. Numerous miracles, both during his lifetime and after his death, have been attributed to his powerful intercession. It is said that he delivered several people from the clutches of demons and that he survived an attempt on his life by poisoning. These events consistently led to conversions.

Hymn of the Seven Saints – Kantik ar seiz sant

Composed by Father Jacques Le Maréchal, this hymn was first sung to a traditional tune in Erdeven, where the seven saints are honored.

“ChorusMaloBriocTudwalPaul, Samson, PadarnCorentin.

1. You sought the face of your Savior without pretense,

You followed Him ceaselessly with quiet faith. For Him, you left everything behind.

2. You bore the sorrows of others with a good heart, without losing hope. You were devoted to hope, which sustains the path that leads to the Father.

3. You lived out mercy for every person in a chaotic world. Share with us the love that enriches both humanity and the entire world.

4. For you are still like beacons for your brothers and sisters on the path to peace, when the burden of misfortune suddenly falls,

We sing of you in the depths of our sorrows.

5. You have never ceased to pray fervently for the people of this land. Teach us—pilgrims following in your footsteps—the path to your true homeland.”
