A Wonderful Novena to Saint George

Saint George, the patron saint of cavalry, is an allegory of good triumphing over evil in the Christian faith, since he slew a dragon. His intercession is very powerful in  protecting us from people with evil intentions or in keeping our faith alive. Here, then, is a beautiful novena to pray in order to ask for the graces of Saint George.

Prayer to Saint George

“On your white horse, O Saint George, you ride forth to battle the dragon. Tirelessly you journey along treacherous paths to deliver those who, without recourse or fortune, are bound in chains.
Saint George, I pray to you, free me from all my chains; come quickly to my aid; strengthen me so that I may walk fearlessly along the paths of life.
Through your intercession, obtain for me success and true joy in Christ.
Through Jesus, our divine Savior and our God, who lives and reigns with the Father in the communion of the Holy Spirit. Amen!”

Recite one Our Father, ten Hail Marys, and one Glory Be.

First day of the novena: Saint George slays the dragon

“Bear your share of hardship along with me like a good soldier of Christ Jesus.”  2 Timothy 2:3

Saint George is depicted as a knight in Byzantine icons, as a defender, armed with a lance, slaying a dragon. This is an allegory of the victory of the Christian faith over the devil, of good over evil.

“Saint George, you fought for the faith and gave your life, for you died a martyr in the fourth century.
You fought against evil and sin in all their forms. You fought the good fight, the fight of God. Saint George, we too must fight against evil. Come to our aid in the struggle we must wage every day against our evil inclinations and against temptations.
Saint George, continue your battle by driving out the devil. Help us in the constant struggle against the enemy of our salvation.
Valiant champion of the faith, help me in the battle against evil, so that by persevering I may win the crown promised at the end.
Come to the aid of our lack of faith, that we may bear witness—that is, confess our faith—as you did, so that after glorifying Him on earth, we may together sing the glory of God for all eternity. Amen.
Saint George, deliver me from all evil and all sin for the glory of God
.”

Second Day of the Novena: Saint George, Fighter for Life

“To satisfy the one who recruited him, a soldier does not become entangled in the business affairs of life.” 2 Timothy 2:4

“Pope Francis bears your name, Saint George. It suits him perfectly, for he fights to help the poor and the vulnerable—such as pregnant women, children, and the elderly.”
He urges us to personally bear witness to our love for life in the battle against the “culture of death.” He encourages us to defend life from conception to its natural end. We pray for the Pope, as he never ceases to ask us to do. Grant him all the graces and gifts necessary to fight the good fight.
No man is capable of saving himself, and no one can defy the laws of time; only the Holy Spirit can do so.
Saint George, you have received divine grace and the power of the Holy Spirit, the Paraclete, to come to the aid of mankind. Grant my mind stability, confidence, and peace. Grant me the chance to overcome trials, to overcome snares and traps, so that I may glorify the King of all things—He who, through the cross, has conquered all. Amen.”

Let us pray: “O God, you granted Saint George strength and steadfastness in the various torments he endured for our faith.
May we, through his intercession, become good fighters for the faith. Grant us a firm faith so that we may serve You with a sincere heart and faithfully until death. Amen.

Saint George, deliver me from all evil and all sin for the glory of God.”

Third Day of the Novena: Saint George, Friend of the Bridegroom

“The one who has the bride is the bridegroom; the best man, who stands and listens to him, rejoices greatly at the bridegroom’s voice. So this joy of mine has been made complete.”  John 3:29

“Saint George, you were a faithful friend of the Bridegroom, a faithful servant of God, and an invincible martyr. God favored you with the gift of faith and set your heart ablaze with the ardent love of Christ. Thanks to these gifts, you were able to fight valiantly against the dragon of pride, lies, and deceit. Neither pain, nor torture, nor death could take away the love you had for Christ.
We cannot embrace the culture of life unless we put down our roots in Jesus, the Bridegroom of our souls; unless we are united to him as the branch is to the vine, because Jesus is the source of life. He defined Himself as the Way, the Truth, and the Life. It is only with Jesus that we can spread this zeal, that we can have this fervor to proclaim the message of life.
Saint George, grant me the graces I ask for; I need your help to act with the forces of good for the progress of the world.
Saint George, deliver me from all evil and all sin for the glory of God.”

Fourth Day of the Novena: Saint George, Servant of Christ

“Am I now currying favor with human beings or God? Or am I seeking to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a slave of Christ.”  Galatians 1:10

“Saint George, you gave your entire life to Christ. Christ was ‘your Lord.’ It was in his name that you fought, and that is why his name was always on your lips and in your heart. Saint George, remind us that Jesus is our Savior, our Brother, our Strength. That is why we can constantly call upon Him for help by speaking His name with respect, trust, and love.
Every day I implore you, O Saint George, valiant martyr. I offer you this prayer: guide me along the path of my life. Through your intercession, may I overcome temptations, so that I may patiently bear the cross that has been placed upon me. Let neither distress nor difficulties separate me from the love of our Lord Jesus Christ. Intercede for me in divine glory; obtain for me forgiveness of my sins and grace from on high. Then I will come to proclaim your praises and declare all your wonders. Amen. Saint George, deliver me from all evil and all sin for the glory of God
.”

Fifth Day of the Novena: Saint George, Valiant Witness to the Beatitudes

“For you will be his witness before all to what you have seen and heard.”  Acts 22:15

“Saint George, you lived each day in the spirit of the Beatitudes taught by Christ for our true happiness. The Beatitudes are the opposite of the world’s maxims, yet it is by living them to the best of our ability that we discover true inner joy in the peace of the soul and the heart. Help us to live as blessed people, following this “charter” that Jesus revealed on the mountain.

Saint George, be the friend I seek—the one who will come to my aid and reach out a helping hand. Valiant Saint George, help me to place my hope in God alone, for you are the protector of humble hearts. Amen.

Saint George, deliver me from all evil and all sin for the glory of God.”

Sixth Day of the Novena: Saint George, Martyr of Christ

“I write these things to you so that you may know that you have eternal life, you who believe in the name of the Son of God.” 1 John 5:13

“Saint George, you fought against evil at the risk of your life. You did not fear, you did not falter; you accepted and endured martyrdom for the salvation of souls by offering your life with Christ, who died for us all on the cross. Saint George, ask for us the will and the strength to always wage the good fight against the forces of evil. Pray for us that we may always have the courage to be witnesses to the Redeemer, Christ on the Cross. Saint George, martyr of Christ, bring about the triumph of the Cross.”

Let us pray: “O God, you granted Saint George strength and steadfastness in the various torments he endured for our holy faith. Through his intercession, may our faith grow greater and stronger, so that we may serve You with a sincere heart and faithfully until death. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Saint George, deliver me from all evil and all sin for the glory of God
.”

Seventh Day of the Novena: Saint George Glorifies the Name of God

“But whoever is made to suffer as a Christian should not be ashamed but glorify God because of the name.” 1 Peter 4:16

“Saint George, brilliant officer, you left your army and chose to be a soldier in the service of Christ.
Saint George, you spurned all the temptations of the world to defend the name of God and oppressed Christians. For this reason, you rose up against the persecutors. Support us, Saint George, in the daily battle we must wage against our own evil tendencies, against temptations, and against the evil that presents itself to us in alluring forms.”

Let us pray: “Following in the footsteps of Saint George, Lord, I wish to set out to serve You, to proclaim the Good News, to reach out to all my brothers and sisters, and to help those who are in difficulty and in danger of losing heart. I wish to make You known and loved. Help me to glorify Your holy name. Amen.
Saint George, deliver me from all evil and all sin for the glory of God.”

Eighth Day of the Novena: Saint George, Blessed as a Martyr for God

“If you are insulted for the name of Christ, blessed are you, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests upon you.”  1 Peter 4:14

“Saint George, you were tortured for confessing your faith in Christ and destroying idols. But you feared neither torture nor death in the presence of the powerful of this world; you exalted the greatness of the God of the Christians and destroyed their idols.
Today, too, we are offered idols to serve instead of worshiping the one true God. Help us to resist the allure of these false deities so that we may entrust ourselves and surrender to our Father and our Savior, Christ. When you fought the ferocious dragon, the Lord gave you wisdom and knowledge; He armed your arm with an invincible spear and showed you the path to victory. Help me to overcome my trials, O Saint George, you who, through your shed blood, have received the victor’s crown. Amen.
Saint George, deliver me from all evil and all sin for the glory of God.”

Ninth Day of the Novena: Saint George, Worker of God

“And whatever you do, in word or in deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.” Colossians 3:17

“Your name, Saint George, means ‘he who cultivates the land’ in Greek. Indeed, you have worked the land of Christ diligently.
The Lord’s call resounded in your heart and stirred your soul. To be like Christ, you gave everything to the poor, and then you went to those who persecuted him to speak to them of peace and love. Like the angel of justice, you are ever riding forth to bring aid to the despised and to deliver those whom the evil one has imprisoned.
Saint George, support those who, for the good of all, strive to ensure that justice reigns in truth, peace, and love. I turn to you, valiant warrior; deliver me from traps and treachery. Come quickly to my aid, O holy horseman, fearsome adversary of the ancient dragon, valiant soldier of Christ our God, tireless laborer in the Lord’s vineyard.
May your protection be a shield for me, and may your intercession become my armor. May I always be preserved by your mighty arm, Saint George, and may I receive grace and blessing from God. Amen.”

Let us pray: “Lord Jesus Christ, for whose sake and in order to bear witness to His faith, Blessed George, Your invincible soldier and generous martyr, endured various torments and suffered the death penalty; we beseech You, grant that, as we confidently turn to this saint in our distress, we may, through his intercession, be delivered from the snares of our invisible enemies and from all evils of soul and body.
Lord, grant us, through the intercession of Blessed George, your martyr, to persevere steadfastly in your faith, and to be so firmly rooted in divine charity that no temptation may ever lead us away from you. Through our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen

Saint George, deliver me from all evil and all sin for the glory of God.”
