Saint Cosmas: Life, Martyrdom, and Prayer

Born in Arabia, Saint Cosmas practiced medicine and surgery in the seaport of Aegeai, in the Gulf of Alexandretta in Cilicia, and later in the Roman province of Syria. He treated patients without asking for money in return. This is why he is referred to as an “anargyre” saint—meaning “without money”—a term used to describe Christian miracle-working saints who exercised their healing gifts without receiving payment. Saint Cosmas and Saint Damian are the most prominent anargyre saints. His holy deeds led to numerous conversions. Thus, Saint Cosmas is the patron saint of surgeons and is celebrated on September 26. He is an example of holiness through his total self-giving to others without expecting anything in return and his immense trust in Christ.
The Life and Martyrdom of Saint Cosmas
Unfortunately, the hagiographies do not provide much information about Saint Cosmas’ youth or his life before he became a doctor. However, we do know that he practiced medicine alongside his brother, Saint Damien, the patron saint of pharmacists. They traveled extensively to provide free medical care and to convert people to the Good News.
During the persecutions of Diocletian (a 4th-century Roman emperor who persecuted Christians from 303 to 311), Saint Cosmas was arrested, along with Saint Damian, on the orders of Lysias, the prefect of Cilicia. Lysias ordered them to renounce their faith or face torture. The two physicians remained faithful to their faith despite the atrocious torture they endured. They were eventually beheaded.
The relics of Saint Cosmas were buried in the city of Cyrus in Syria, alongside those of his brother. In their honor, Patriarch Proclus I had churches built over their tombs. It was then that a miraculous healing took place. Justinian attributed it to the holy relics. He had a church built and decorated as a token of his gratitude. It has since become a place of pilgrimage.

“O martyrs of Jesus Christ, Cosmas and Damian, we honor you with all humility and with the affection of our hearts.
Through your outstanding merits, you have received from the Lord the power to protect all those who turn to you in their distress.
That is why we will never cease to invoke your intercession.
Just as during your earthly lives you healed dangerous illnesses through the practice of medicine and the invocation of the Name of Jesus Christ, like the Apostles, so now that you are powerful in Heaven, turn your merciful gaze toward us.
We are weak, sinful, and sick; we feel the need for divine help.
We beg you: assist us, obtain for us from the Lord the healing of our illnesses, and pray to the Good Lord to free us from sin.
We ask for these graces not only for ourselves, but also for our parents, our families, our friends, and our enemies, so that, protected by you on earth—in soul and body—we may come to Heaven to praise and bless the Lord for all eternity. Amen.”
