On February 11, 1858, the Blessed Virgin appeared in Lourdes at the grotto to Bernadette Soubirous. During this first apparition, the beautiful Lady held a rosary in her hand and silently prayed it. Bernadette followed Mary's example. She prayed the rosary, the only prayer she knew, as she would often repeat later.
Following the messenger of Lourdes, we can also take our rosaries to spend time with the Blessed Virgin. Other saints, like Bernadette, made it a point to pray the rosary daily.
“O Mary, it is in the midst of pain and trial that You became my Mother, so I must have great and complete trust in You; when I am under the trial of creatures, and when I am exposed to temptation and the desolation of my soul, I will come and take refuge in Your Heart, my good Mother, and beg You not to let me perish, to grant me the grace to be submissive and trusting in trial, following Your example, to suffer with love; that I may remain, like You, standing at the foot of the Cross and nailed to the Cross, if such is the good pleasure of Your dear Son. Never will a child devoted to Mary perish; my good Mother, have pity on me; I give myself entirely to You, so that You may give me to Your dear Son, whom I wish to love with all my heart. My good Mother, give me a heart burning with love for Jesus. Amen.”
Before beginning the meditation of the rosary, we can place a small statue of Our Lady of Lourdes in our prayer corner to be like Bernadette before the Virgin of the grotto.
We can begin the rosary by slowly making the Sign of the Cross, as Bernadette did, following Mary's gestures at the grotto. Then, we can recite:
The Apostles' Creed
The Our Father
Three Hail Marys
Next, we can meditate on the mystery of the rosary corresponding to the day of the week:
Monday and Saturday: The Joyful Mysteries
Tuesday and Friday: The Sorrowful Mysteries
Wednesday and Sunday: The Glorious Mysteries
Thursday: The Luminous Mysteries
After meditating on each mystery, we pray a decade of the rosary, beginning with an Our Father, followed by ten Hail Marys, and concluding with a Glory Be.
We can conclude the rosary by invoking Our Lady of Lourdes and reading the prayer written by Saint Bernadette.
During the rosary, it is customary to entrust intentions for each decade. With Saint Bernadette, we can particularly pray for the sick in our families or for ourselves if we are suffering physically or emotionally. We can also pray this rosary with the sick to allow them to benefit from the graces that flow from meditating on the rosary.
