Pray the Rosary with Saint Francis

At the end of the 12th century and the beginning of the 13th century, Saint Francis of Assisi emerged as a figure who renewed the faith of his contemporaries. He lived in complete harmony with the Gospel and left us an example of faith and humility that we can follow. The rosary is a Marian prayer that helps us grow in holiness. We can ask for special graces with this great saint of Assisi, as well as with other saints who loved spending time with the Blessed Virgin.

Prayer to Mary Written by Saint Francis of Assisi

“Hail, holy Lady, most holy Queen, Mary, Mother of God, ever Virgin, chosen from heaven by the most holy Father, consecrated by Him and by His most holy beloved Son and by the Holy Spirit, the Comforter, in whom was and is all the fullness of grace and every good. Hail, His palace. Hail, His tabernacle. Hail, His dwelling. Hail, His garment. Hail, His handmaid. Hail, His Mother, and all you holy virtues, which, by the grace and light of the Holy Spirit, are poured into the hearts of the faithful, so that from being faithless, they may be made faithful to God. Amen.”

How to Pray the Rosary

Before beginning, we can choose a quiet place, perhaps in nature. Then, we can take time to read Saint Francis's prayer to the Virgin. This salutation allows us to begin the rosary.

Next, we can recite:

  • The Apostles' Creed

  • The Our Father

  • Three Hail Marys

Then, we can meditate on the mystery of the rosary corresponding to the day of the week:

After meditating on each mystery, we pray a decade of the rosary, beginning with an Our Father, followed by ten Hail Marys, and concluding with a Glory Be.

At the end of the rosary, we can conclude with the following invocation: “Saint Francis of Assisi, pray for us.”

What Intentions Can I Entrust with Saint Francis?

Before starting the rosary, we can take a few minutes to choose prayer intentions. We can entrust one intention for each decade, totaling five intentions. These intentions can help us refocus if our minds wander during the prayer.

With Saint Francis of Assisi, we can pray for the Pope. Indeed, he chose to bear the same name as the saint of Assisi. We also know that the Pope asks for a place in our prayers. In 1979, Pope John Paul II declared Saint Francis the patron saint of ecology. We can entrust our planet to him and ask for guidance in taking better care of it. Through his 2015 encyclical Laudato Si, Pope Francis provides concrete ways to live more sustainably on Earth.

We can also pray for peace during the rosary. In his life, Saint Francis participated in a crusade. His approach was different from others, preferring dialogue to weapons. We can therefore entrust all conflict situations to him, asking for his intercession with the Blessed Virgin.
