Dizainier: Everything You Need to Know about this Religious Object

An object of piety, this mini-chaplet is a prayer aid for Catholics. Associated with the prayer of the rosary, the dizainier - sometimes also written and pronounced dizenier  - makes it possible to divide your recitation of the rosary into tens and thus to pray easily throughout the day. It is also sometimes called a rosary of ten. This religious object has also become a Christian symbol and jewelry piece.

What is a “Dizainier”?

The term “dizainier” defines an object composed of ten pearls, representing the ten “Hail Marys” forming a decade of a rosary. The 10 pearls (knots or beads) can also represent the 10 commandments that Moses received from God on Mount Sinai.

As old as the prayer of the rosary, the first dizainiers in the Middle Ages were often 10 knots made on a cord. Today, the principle remains unchanged, but the forms have multiplied.

The ring dizainier

This dizainier form is particularly used by scouts. It is indeed to them that we owe the restoration of this object at the beginning of the twentieth century. It is most often a silver metal ring, surmounted by a cross and having 10 pins.
It can also be made of wood with 10 beads. The principle remains the same: the ring is placed at the top of the index finger and the thumb traces the decade

The dizainier bracelet

Nowadays, we find more and more dizainiers in the form of bracelets. Composed of beads made of wood, glass, plastic, semi-precious stones, or mother-of-pearl, the choice of material can meet both aesthetic and symbolic tastes.

It must be able to be easily put on and removed from the wrist. They are therefore generally threaded on an elastic, which must be strong enough to withstand handling.

The dizainier often has a cross or a medal marking the beginning and end of each decade.

How to use a dizainier?

The purpose of the dizainier is not to have to count your prayers and thus not to be disturbed in your recitation. Indeed, the dizainier held in the palm of the hand (or on the index finger in the case of a ring) allows you to follow the progress of the prayer by moving your finger from one bead to the other with the recitations.
