Anima Christi

The Anima Christi (Soul of Christ) is a Christian prayer to Jesus. St. Ignatius of Loyola mentions it and encourages its use in his Spiritual Exercises. Anima Christi is a prayer for redemption, like other prayers to the precious blood of Jesus, to the Holy Wounds, or to the Sacred Heart. Christians express their wish to unite themselves with Jesus through this prayer: we plead with Him to purify us, to strengthen us, and to let us live in Him. It can therefore be said during the Sacrament of the Eucharist. Like many other traditional Latin prayers, it can be recited in the vernacular.

The Anima Christi in Latin

“Anima Christi, sanctífica me.

Corpus Christi, salva me.

Sanguis Christi, inébria me.

Aqua láteris Christi, lava me.

Pássio Christi, confórta me.

O bone Jesu, exáudi me.

Intra tua vúlnera abscónde me.

Ne permíttas me separári a te.

Ab hoste malígno defénde me.

In hora mortis meæ voca me.

Et iube me veníre ad te, ut cum Sanctis tuis laudem te in sæcula sæculórum.

Amen.”

The Anima Christi in English

“Soul of Christ, sanctify me.

 Body of Christ, save me.

Blood of Christ, inebriate me.

Water from the side of Christ, wash me.

Passion of Christ, strengthen me.

O good Jesus, hear me.

Within Thy wounds hide me.

Separated from Thee let me never be.

From the malignant enemy, defend me.

At the hour of death, call me.

And close to Thee bid me.

That with Thy saints I may be Praising Thee, forever and ever.

Amen.”
