7 Bible Verses about Money

We all know the bible story about the rich young man who wanted to follow Jesus but backed down when Jesus asked him to give everything he had to the poor. Jesus responded that it's very difficult for a rich person to enter the kingdom of Heaven. When we hear this story, we might think that God only accepts the poor, those who have very little money. God Himself said: “The silver is mine and the gold is mine (...)” (Haggai 2:8) What God truly sees negatively is being attached to money so much that we refuse to give. We must be attentive to the place that money occupies in our hearts. Here are 7 bible verses about how God expects us to behave when it comes to money.

7 Quotes from Scripture about Resisting the Love of Money

We have a choice between serving God or serving money

“No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other.  You cannot serve both God and money.” (Matthew 6:24)

Loving money creates evil in our hearts

“But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that. Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.” (1 Timothy 6:8-10)

Our value isn't connected to what we own

“Then he said to them, ‘Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.” (Luke 12:15)

Giving to the poor is imitating God

“You yourselves know that these hands of mine have supplied my own needs and the needs of my companions. In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive” (Acts 20:34-35)

You reap what you sow

“Whoever sows to please their flesh, from the flesh will reap destruction; whoever sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life. Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” (Galatians 6:8-9)

Give in order to receive in Heaven

“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” (Matthew 6:19-21)

Wisdom is more precious than money

“Why should fools have money in hand to buy wisdom, when they are not able to understand it?” (Proverbs 17:16)
