Wedding Prayer Examples

In certain wedding services, the bride and groom are invited to share their wedding prayer with the assembly during the ceremony at Church. They can write the prayer themselves, or choose to recite an already existing one. They can also draw inspiration from other prayers. What matters is to find or write a text that shows your true feelings!

Here are a few wedding prayer samples to pick from.

On Marriage, by Kahlil Gibran

“You were born together, and together you shall be forevermore.
You shall be together when the white wings of death scatter your days.
Ay, you shall be together even in the silent memory of God.
But let there be spaces in your togetherness,
And let the winds of the heavens dance between you.

Love one another, but make not a bond of love:
Let it rather be a moving sea between the shores of your souls.
Fill each other’s cup but drink not from one cup.
Give one another of your bread but eat not from the same loaf.
Sing and dance together and be joyous, but let each one of you be alone,
Even as the strings of the lute are alone though they quiver with the same music.

Give your hearts, but not into each other’s keeping.
For only the hand of Life can contain your hearts.
And stand together yet not too near together:
For the pillars of the temple stand apart,
And the oak tree and the cypress grow not in each other’s shadow.”

Wedding Prayer by Sister Emmanuelle

“Lord, we entrust You with our love, for we know You will never let it stop burning.
May this love draw its source from You, that we both always prefer to give love than to receive it.
We pray that, in our joyful days, we will not forget about the rest of the world.
We pray that the days of sorrow will cement our love, and that on those days, we will not give in to despair.
Oh Lord, You are the Life: may we always be prepared and willing to welcome the fruit of our love.
You are the Truth: may we never reject truth, and always make our intentions transparent to one another.
You are the Way: may we always walk this way, hand in hand, and never feel like we are plodding along.
Oh Lord, You gave us Mary as the ever-faithful, kind and confident Mother of humanity: may She guard and protect the family we are creating today.
May Her faith, kindness and confidence inspire us to stay faithful, kind and confident forever!”.

A Prayer for a Lasting Love

“Oh lord, we love each other, and together, we offer you this love.
Help us to love even more.
Keep us always hoping, make us more generous.
Consolidate our vows, breathe through us a wind of freedom.
We chose each other, but we know that next to You, we are not strong.
Only You can help us carry our commitment and make our hearts more accepting.
Let us enjoy this life with the excitement of new beginnings.

May our joy never be dimmed by the monotony of routine, and may our intelligence always prevail over the weariness of the day.
We offer ourselves to you with fervor: teach us to be consistent.
Help us be emotionally ready to prepare for each day, but allow us to appreciate the uniqueness of every moment.
Let us walk together, exploring new discoveries after new discoveries, making great offerings after great offerings.
May we be a source of kindness, consolation, forgiveness and simplicity for each other.
Make our tenderness as beautiful and as sure as the rise of a new tomorrow.
Strengthen our intimacy, make it full of mystery, but leave us enough love to share with the rest of the world, as a shield against contempt and abandonment.
May our joy always reveal its luminous face everywhere, to everyone, and be a sign of fraternity.
Amen.”

A Wedding Prayer for Trust

“Lord, Our God,
We bless You, and we thank You for creating us in Your image and likeness: You made us man and woman, and invited us to join each other to experience a powerful and joyful love.

You are forever blessed for inspiring us to pronounce this great “yes”, for making us capable of trust and forgiveness, for enlightening our relationship with Your Divine Presence through joy and sadness.

Oh Faithful and Benevolent God, we pray that You teach us to renew our engagements every day, that You maintain our love as new as the very first day, that you strengthen our faithfulness, that You accompany us in times of doubt, that you remind us of the most important when we are weak: our desire to live for one another, and to bring life.

Most Holy Trinity, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, we pray to You for every couple that is going through a hard time, for every one who struggles to find trust in their relationship. Lord Our God, grant Your gifts of unity, faithfulness and fruitfulness to every spouse, and to every family.

Amen.”

Translated from Cardinal Godfried Danneels’ wedding prayer for the bride and groom.

Prayer for a wedding anniversary

“O Lord,  You have supported us, this little community, through joy and pain: come purify us, breathe Your Holy Spirit through us to strengthen our love. With Your help, united with our children, we will always rejoice in Your alliance.
Through Christ, Our Lord.

Amen.”
