Prayer to St. Christopher

Saint Christopher, the patron saint of travellers, is often depicted as a giant man, with a child on his shoulder and a staff in his hand.

According to legend, one day, St. Christopher helped a child cross a river by carrying him on his back, but with each step, his burden became so heavy that he almost drowned. Once arrived on the river shore, the child revealed to St. Christopher that he was Jesus Christ: thus Christopher was carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders. Travellers about the start their journey often say prayers to him for safety.

The Motorist’s Prayer

“Grant me O Lord a steady hand and watchful eye.

That no one shall be hurt as I pass by.

You  gave life, I pray no act of mine may take away or mar that gift of Yours.

Shelter those, dear Lord, who bear my company

From the evils of fire and all calamity.

Teach me to use my car for others need;

Nor miss through love of undue speed

The beauty of the world; that I may

With joy and courtesy go on my way.

St. Christopher, holy patron saint of travelers, Protect me.

And lead me safely to my destiny.

Amen.”
