Meditate on the Mystery of the Wedding of Cana in the Prayer of the Rosary

The wedding at Cana is a biblical episode that Pope John Paul II proposed as a second luminous mystery. This mystery invites us to meditate on the powerful intercession of the Virgin when we ask for her help. Through this mystery of the rosary and in many other mysteries, the rosary invites us to walk with Jesus and Mary.

What is the Mystery of the Wedding at Cana?

We can read this account of the first miracle of Jesus, then beginning his public life, in the gospel according to Saint John in chapter 2. These are verses 1 to 11.

The story of the Wedding at Cana in the Bible

On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there, and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. When the wine was gone, Jesus’ mother said to him, “They have no more wine.”
“Woman, why do you involve me?” Jesus replied. “My hour has not yet come.”

His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”

Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding from twenty to thirty gallons.

Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water”; so they filled them to the brim.

Then he told them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.”

They did so, and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside, and said, “Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best until now.”

What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the signs through which he revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him.

 (John 2:1-11)

When and how to recite this second luminous mystery?

This second luminous mystery makes us meditate on the beginning of Jesus' public life some time after his baptism by John the Baptist in the Jordan. Following this mystery, we can meditate on the other four luminous mysteries: the baptism of Jesus, the proclamation of the Kingdom of God, the transfiguration and the institution of the Eucharist on Thursday. These mysteries were added by Pope John Paul II in 2002. He speaks of this in his apostolic letter Rosarium Virginis Mariae.

The fruit of the mystery associated with the meditation on the wedding feast of Cana is an appeal to the power of the Blessed Virgin. This beautiful mystery shows us that Mary can intercede for us as a good mother attentive to the requests of her children. This is an opportunity to ask Mary for her help in various situations that concern us.

Meditations and Quotes on the Wedding at Cana

Discover the power of Mary's intercession

“ While exercising a discreet and maternal influence, Mary leads her Son to perform his first sign. Jesus answers in abundance and shows what a mother's love can do for Him.” Saint John Paul II

“All that the Son asks of the Father is granted to him. All that the Mother asks of the Son is likewise granted to her… What must commit us to address her with great confidence is that she is always attentive.” Saint Jean-Marie Vianney, parish priest of Ars

Grow in trust in the Blessed Virgin by meditating on this luminous mystery

“While waiting for heaven, O my dear Mother, I want to live with you, to follow you every day Mother, as I contemplate you, I immerse myself delighted Discovering in your heart abysses of Love. Your motherly gaze banishes all my fears It teaches me to weep, it teaches me to enjoy. Instead of despising pure and holy joys You want to share them, you deign to bless them.”
