Meditate on the Mystery of the Transfiguration in the Prayer of the Rosary

The transfiguration is the fourth luminous mystery that Pope John Paul II added to the luminous mysteries in 2002. Through these meditations on different significant episodes in the public life of Jesus, the Pope wanted to complete the rosary and give us a complete summary of the gospel. This mystery invites us to enter into a heart-to-heart with Christ.

What is the fourth luminous mystery?

The fourth luminous mystery invites us to meditate on the transfiguration. Pierre, Jacques and Jean are on Mount Tabor and are present at a privileged moment: Jesus is in the company of Moses and Elijah.

Transfiguration in the Bible

About eight days after Jesus said this, he took Peter, John and James with him and went up onto a mountain to pray. As he was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes became as bright as a flash of lightning. Two men, Moses and Elijah, appeared in glorious splendor, talking with Jesus. They spoke about his departure, which he was about to bring to fulfillment at Jerusalem. Peter and his companions were very sleepy, but when they became fully awake, they saw his glory and the two men standing with him. As the men were leaving Jesus, Peter said to him, “Master, it is good for us to be here. Let us put up three shelters—one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.” (He did not know what he was saying.)

While he was speaking, a cloud appeared and covered them, and they were afraid as they entered the cloud. A voice came from the cloud, saying, “This is my Son, whom I have chosen; listen to him.” When the voice had spoken, they found that Jesus was alone. The disciples kept this to themselves and did not tell anyone at that time what they had seen.

 (Luke 9:34 -35)

When and how to recite the mystery of the transfiguration?

The transfiguration is the fourth luminous mystery. The  other luminous mysteries are also meditated on on Thursday: the baptism of Jesus, the wedding at Cana, the proclamation of the kingdom of God and the institution of the Eucharist. The fruit of the mystery of the transfiguration is to let the light of Christ penetrate our lives. This mystery invites us to listen to Christ and maintain a beautiful friendship with Him.

Meditations and Quotes on the Mystery of the Transfiguration

To be transfigured by Christ, we can follow the three paths proposed below and ask for the grace during this decade to open our hearts to Christ.

Listen to Christ

“Lord, here we are to listen to what You want to tell us. Speak to us; we are attentive to your Voice. May your Words, as they descend into our soul, inflame our will to rush forth fervently to serve you. Saint Jose Maria Escriva de Balaguer

Establish a relationship of friendship with Christ

“As the disciples on the Tabor no longer saw anything but Jesus alone, the inner souls, on the Tabor of their hearts, see only Our Lord. They are two friends who never get tired of each other.” (Saint Curé d 'Ars)

Pray with the words of Saint Bernadette

“O Mary, keep Jesus in my heart! Thanks to your divine light, I understood everything. Jesus must reign in my heart, in my mind, in my will in order to reign in my entire soul.” (Saint Bernadette)
