Meditating on the Mystery of the Institution of the Eucharist in the Prayer of the Rosary

The institution of the Eucharist is the fifth luminous mystery added by John Paul II in 2002 when the apostolic letter Rosarium Virginis Mariae was published. This luminous mystery invites us to discover or rediscover the treasure of the Eucharist. The luminous mysteries like the other mysteries of the rosary invite us to follow Jesus and his mother and they make us walk towards holiness.

What is the fifth luminous mystery in the prayer of the rosary?

The institution of the Eucharist refers to the last supper before the passion of Christ which begins with the agony of Jesus in the garden of olive trees. The four evangelists tell us the story of this first Mass and we can read here the verses of Saint Matthew.

The Institution of the Eucharist in the Bible

While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my body.”

Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. I tell you, I will not drink from this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.”

(Matthew 26:26-29)

When and how to recite the mystery of the institution of the Eucharist?

This mystery of the rosary closes the luminous mysteries traditionally recited on Thursdays. The other four that we can meditate on are: the baptism of Jesus, the wedding at Cana, the proclamation of the kingdom of God and the transfiguration.

The fruit of the mystery that we meditate on is a great devotion to the Eucharist. This mystery invites us to deepen our love of the Eucharist through the Mass or times of adoration.

Meditations and Quotes on the Fifth Luminous Mystery

Learn of the grace of the Eucharist

At the Last Supper, Jesus instituted the sacrament of His Body and His Blood, the Memorial of His Paschal Sacrifice. In doing so, He placed Himself in the stead of the ancient sacrifices, but within a rite that He commanded the apostles to perpetuate as the supreme sign of the true Sacred, which is Himself. It is with this faith, dear brothers and sisters, that we celebrate today and every day the Eucharistic Mystery and adore it as the center of our lives and the heart of the world. (Benedict XVI)

Resting with Jesus present in the Eucharist

"Lord, I do not want to fly close to the ground anymore! May the rays of the divine Sun, Christ, always enlighten me in the Eucharist! May my flight not be interrupted until I have found rest in Your Heart!" (Saint José Maria Escriva de Balaguer) "Oh my God, what immensities of love! What infinite horizons! That the beloved gives himself to the one who loves him, what sweetness, what happiness! No, my God, I can say nothing, I can only adore, bow down, be silent, be confounded, faint in annihilated gratitude ... My God, how You love us! (Saint Charles de Foucauld)
