The rosary is a Marian prayer composed of four series of mysteries. The luminous mysteries offer us to follow Christ in the beginning of his public life. Added in 2002 by Holy Pope John Paul II, we can take the time to meditate on the sacrament of baptism, on the example of Christ who, by becoming man, gives us an example of faith that we can follow.
The story of the baptism of Jesus is told by the four evangelists that we can take the time to read in addition to that written by Saint John and which we find below. We can also read Matthew 3:11 -17, Mark 1: 9-11, or Luke 3:21 -22.
The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! This is the one I meant when I said, ‘A man who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.’ I myself did not know him, but the reason I came baptizing with water was that he might be revealed to Israel.”
Then John gave this testimony: “I saw the Spirit come down from heaven as a dove and remain on him. And I myself did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, ‘The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’ I have seen and I testify that this is God’s Chosen One.”
(John 1:29-34)
With the meditation of this first luminous mystery, we begin the public life of Jesus. By adding this series of mysteries, Pope John Paul II gives us a complete summary of the gospel and the life of Christ with the wedding at cana, the proclamation of the kingdom, the transfiguration of Jesus and the institution of the Eucharist.
These mysteries are traditionally prayed on Thursdays.
The mystery of the baptism of Jesus in the Jordan invites us through the fruit of the mystery to live by the gifts of our baptism. We can take the time to give thanks for this sacrament that we have received or that we are preparing to receive.
Through baptism, each Christian meets God in a personal way and receives a new life that is God's own life. What a great gift and what a great responsibility! The Lord asks you to accompany your children on the path to holiness, strive to be holy yourselves in order to guide your children towards this lofty goal of Christian life. Saint John Paul II
After thirty full years of hidden life, I got baptized, for you, out of love for you. See once again that all my actions are done out of love for you, and therefore I call you to two things through all my actions, to love me in recognition of this love with which I love you, and to love one another to imitate me in this love where I embrace you all. Thus, above all else, all my actions preach to you: the love of God, the love of neighbor. I have told you, and I will tell you until the end, that these two loves are your first two duties, your two great duties. Saint Charles de Foucauld
