Doxology: prayers to the glory of God!

What is a doxology? From the Greek doxa - "glory" - and logos - "word"-, a doxology can be defined as a prayer celebrating the glory of God, particularly in its Trinitarian form. Such is the case of the "little doxology", which glorifies the Holy Trinity: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. We find these words of praise in the liturgy, during the Mass, at the end of the Eucharistic prayer and in the offices, notably with theGloire à Dieu prayer. But there are also many examples of doxology in the Bible. Discover these beautiful ways of giving glory to God!

Doxology in Christian liturgy

Here are three of the best-known Catholic prayers to the glory of God. There are others, such as the Te Deum.

Final doxology of the Eucharistic prayer

"Through him, with him and in him".
This formula to the glory of God is recited at the end of the Eucharistic Prayer at Mass.

The Glory be to the Father (Gloria Patri) or short doxology

"Glory be to the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and for ever and ever. Amen"
This doxology to the Trinity is recited at the end of each decade of the Rosary .
It also concludes the psalms in the Office of the Hours: "Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, for ever and ever. Amen."

The Gloria prayer or great doxology

"Glory to God in Heaven and peace on earth to men who love him
 We praise you,
 We bless you,
 We adore you,
 We glorify you,
We give you thanks for your immense glory.

Lord God, King of Heaven, Almighty Father
 Lord, only Son Jesus Christ
Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father

You who take away the sin of the world, have mercy on us.

You who take away the sin of the world, receive our prayer.

You who sit at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us.

For you alone are holy, you alone are Lord
You alone are the Most High Jesus Christ
 with the Holy Spirit
in the glory of God the Father
 Amen "

To thee, O Lord, be strength and greatness, brightness, victory, majesty, all, in heaven and on earth!
Yours, O Lord, is the kingdom, the primacy over the universe: riches and glory come from your face!
You are the Master of all: in your hand is strength and power; everything, by your hand, grows and is established." (1 Chronicles 29:10-12)

"Praise the L ord , all you nations! Extol him, all you peoples! His mercy for us is strong; the faithfulness of the L ord is forever. Hallelujah!)" (Psalm 117, 1-3)
