The Miracles of Padre Pio

Padre Pio (1887-1968) stands among the most extraordinary figures of holiness due to the mystical phenomena that were common in his life. His entire existence was a succession of miracles and gifts from God aimed at serving Christ and others. This Capuchin friar lived in great humility at the San Giovanni Rotondo monastery. The Catholic Church canonized Padre Pio not because of extraordinary events but for the holiness of his life and the heroic practice of Christian virtues throughout his lifetime.

Extraordinary Mystical Phenomena in Padre Pio's Life

Even before performing his first miracles of healings, conversions, and even resurrections, Padre Pio already experienced miracles in his life. Since childhood, he saw his guardian angel, had apparitions of the Virgin Mary and Jesus, endured violent attacks from the Devil, and received extraordinary mystical gifts from the Lord: the stigmata (the five wounds of Christ's Passion), the gift of bilocation (being in two places at once), the gift of reading souls, the gift of prophecy, etc. Discover all the mystical phenomena experienced by Padre Pio in this dedicated article!

Miracles During Padre Pio's Lifetime

The following three examples of healing/resurrection are among thousands of attested healings documented in complete testimonies authenticated by medicine.

Padre Pio's First Miracle

At age 32, Padre Pio saw a man walking painfully with crutches. The Capuchin exclaimed: "Drop those crutches!" The poor man, named Pasquales di Chiara, replied anxiously, "but I'll fall". Padre Pio firmly repeated: "Put down those crutches". The man obeyed but sought support; however, he stood without difficulty unaided. Padre Pio continued: "Man of little faith, walk!" The man testified to feeling a burning sensation throughout his body and beginning to walk normally without difficulty. Pasquales' daughter, Italia, also disabled and wearing leg prostheses due to childhood paralysis, met Padre Pio. He asked her, as he had her father, to remove her prostheses. The young girl, confident, immediately obeyed and was instantly and permanently healed.

The Healing of Gemma Di Giorgi, Blind from Birth

Anna Gemma Di Giorgi was a 7-year-old girl, blind from birth, diagnosed with "irremediable blindness since she was born without pupils". Her grandmother, hearing about graces flowing from Padre Pio's stigmatized hands, decided to take the child to San Giovanni Rotondo. She hoped at least the child could confess and receive First Communion from Padre Pio. After a night of waiting, they entered the crowded church for Mass. After the celebration, the future saint called the blind girl by name for confession. He blessed her by tracing a cross on her eyes. That afternoon, the girl received Communion and Padre Pio repeated his blessing. The child then realized she could see normally. She was examined by her ophthalmologist in Sicily and at Italy's best eye centers. All doctors concurred: the child had no pupils and scientifically couldn't see – yet she saw.

Resurrection of a Baby

Maria Gennai was the mother of a toddler with a serious illness. In desperation, she went to San Giovanni Rotondo, but the baby died during the journey. Maria placed the child in her suitcase and courageously continued to Padre Pio's monastery. Upon arrival, she queued for confession, clutching her suitcase. Before Padre Pio, the woman implored help and burst into tears, opening her suitcase to show her dead baby. Padre Pio laid hands on the child while praying. The infant began moving arms and legs, and the Capuchin told the woman: "Mother, why are you crying? Don't you see your son is sleeping?"

Miracles of Padre Pio After His Death

The Miraculous Image

During Padre Pio's funeral, a miracle was witnessed by the crowd: his living image was visible on the window of his former cell. To calm the agitation, the guardian monk ordered the window opened and a white sheet hung instead. As the crowd grew disappointed, the image reappeared – this time on all windows of the monastery facade.

The Incorrupt Body

Padre Pio died in 1968, and his body remains remarkably preserved today. Some body parts, like his hands, are "incorrupt". Thus, Padre Pio's body is regularly displayed in a glass shrine for veneration by the faithful.

Miracles for Canonization

Typically, to proclaim canonization, the Church must recognize two miracles attributed to the saint's intercession. For Padre Pio's canonization, a 104-volume dossier was presented containing 73 testimonies of miraculous healings.
