The Miracles After Padre Pio's Death
The extraordinary life of Padre Pio made him famous during his lifetime, drawing crowds to San Giovanni Rotondo to see the saint, confess to him, and entrust him with all kinds of difficult cases. The exceptional mystical phenomena experienced by the humble Capuchin friar attracted attention from the Church and the scientific/medical community. The Incorrupt Body of Saint Padre Pio
Over 50 years after his death, Saint Padre Pio's body remains perfectly preserved – incorrupt. The body is now permanently displayed for veneration in a glass shrine at San Giovanni Rotondo. For aesthetic reasons, the face is covered with a small wax mask. During certain exhumations, Padre Pio's body emits a very pleasant fragrance (floral or even spicy), and it has also bled when pricked or cut. These phenomena currently have no scientific explanation.
Other saints' bodies show similar characteristics in Church history: Saint Bernadette Soubirous and Saint Catherine Labouré (displayed at Rue du Bac) have incorrupt bodies. Little Jacinta of Fatima was found perfectly preserved decades after her death, her face intact.
The Apparition on the Convent Window
During Padre Pio's funeral, a large crowd gathered in San Giovanni Rotondo. Praying faithful suddenly saw his living, smiling image appear on his cell window. Everyone marveled until the monastery's leader calmed the crowd by hanging a white sheet over the window. To the crowd's astonishment, the saint's image then appeared on all windows of the convent facade!

Healing of an Alcoholic
A recently married man with a small child had an alcoholism problem. One day, walking home from work, the young man prayed the rosary hoping for deliverance from alcohol, noting despairingly that his condition had only worsened. He realized alcoholism would ruin his personal and family life. Determined to recover, he prayed to Padre Pio, imploring help. Suddenly, a powerful, indescribable fragrance filled the surrounding air, enveloping him with immense peace. The scent vanished as suddenly as it came. Returning home, he entered his sleeping child's room where the fragrance enveloped him again. He testifies that from that day onward, he developed a deep disgust for alcohol. For over 20 years since, he has never desired alcohol in any form.
Healing During a Dream
Gregory William Collins suffered terrible full-body pain for over 10 years. In December 1983, he began a novena to Padre Pio for healing. By February, his condition worsened with unbearable pain. On February 10, 1984, he testifies to being healed in a dream: "I was in a beautiful chapel when Padre Pio approached and told me to sit. He touched my swollen ankles and back, then said: 'Get up and walk, you are healed!'" Gregory awoke suddenly, got out of bed, and walked pain-free. That morning, he attended Mass to thank God, but during the service, the pain returned. Moments later, Gregory felt warmth from a hand touching his back. From then on, the pain never returned.
Instant Healing from Cancer
Maria Juliana Cosi, a 56-year-old cleaning woman in Florence, Italy, developed tongue pain in spring 1990. By August, she informed her employer of a serious fungal infection. Her condition rapidly deteriorated, with pain so severe she couldn't chew. Examined at a Florence hospital, doctors diagnosed tongue cancer and scheduled surgery. While reassuring Maria, doctors told her employer they had little chance of stopping the cancer. Her employer, Padrini, gave Maria an image of Padre Pio and encouraged her to pray for healing through his intercession. Surgery was scheduled for August 21, 1990, at Santa Maria Novella Hospital. Before surgery, while removing teeth, the dentist was surprised to find her tongue perfectly healthy. Later, the surgeon examining Maria's mouth found no trace of cancer. He canceled the surgery and discharged Maria. She lived many more years in perfect health.
Apparitions of Padre Pio After Death
Apparitions to Mamma Rosa
Mamma Rosa (1909-1981), an Italian mother, met Padre Pio during a visit to San Giovanni Rotondo. She claimed to have had apparitions of the Virgin Mary at San Damiano for many years, receiving messages to share worldwide. Mamma Rosa also had apparitions of Saint Padre Pio. On May 31, 1970, she said: "The Heavenly Mother is now at the pear tree with all the apostles. Above her is the Most Holy Trinity, beside her Saint Peter and Padre Pio."
Apparition to Maria Valtorta
In 1941 and 1942, Padre Pio appeared to Maria Valtorta while he was still alive. Maria wrote on May 13, 1943: "*I saw (in a dream) Padre Pio of Pietrelcina and spoke with him. I saw him, still in a dream, in ecstasy after Holy Mass – I saw his penetrating gaze, and when he took my hand, I felt the scar of his stigmata. And, not in a dream but while fully awake, I smelled his fragrance. No garden full of blooming flowers could emit such heavenly fragrances as those filling my room the night of July 25-26, 1941, and the afternoon of September 21, 1942, just when a friend spoke of me to Padre (I didn't know he'd gone to San Giovanni Rotondo). Both times, I received the graces requested. Marta (the maid) also smelled this fragrance. It was so strong it woke her. Then it vanished suddenly, as it came.*"
