July 11, feast of Saint Benedict
Saint Benedict of Nursia , born in 480 in Italy, in the province of Umbria, is the founder of theBenedictine order and author of a Rule governing their lives, adopted throughout the world by monks, nuns and even lay people. He wrote it after retiring to a cave to pray and practice asceticism. He was joined by other hermits, already in awe of his holiness. As the community grew, he had to gather them together on Monte Cassino, between Naples and Rome, and regulate community life. Thus was written the Rule of Saint Benedict, 73 short chapters and a prologue. The Rule combines prayer, work (divided between intellectual and manual tasks) and temperance, in a climate of balance and peace. " Ora et labora", pray and work, was his motto. This Benedictine rule contributed to the renewal of Western Christianity and had a wider impact on medieval European civilization. Saint Benedict is considered the patriarch of Western monks and the patron saint of Europe (along with saints Cyril and Methodius ).
Saint Benedict is celebrated on July 11 , the day his relics were transferred to the abbey of Saint-Benoît-sur-Loire. The monks and nuns of the Order of Saint Benedict celebrate their founder by remembering his spiritual and cultural heritage, and honor his memory. Masses are celebrated in his honor, with special prayers. In some regions, processions are even organized. The festival sometimes lasts several days. "O glorious St. Benedict, sublime model of all virtues, pure receptacle of God's grace. Here I am, humbly prostrate before you. I implore your loving heart to intercede for me before the divine throne of God. I surrender to you all the dangers that surround me daily. Protect me from my enemies, from the evil annemin in all its forms, and inspire me to imitate you in all things. May your blessing be with me always, so that I may flee from all that is not pleasing to God and thus avoid opportunities for sin. I ask you, with gentleness, to obtain for me from God the favors and graces I need so much, in the trials, miseries and afflictions of life. Your heart was always so full of love, compassion and mercy towards those who were afflicted or in difficulty of any kind. You never sent away without comfort and assistance a person who came to you. I therefore invoke your powerful intercession, with the hope and confidence that you will hear my prayers and obtain for me the grace and special favor I so earnestly implore [formulate the request], if it is for the greater glory of God and the good of my soul. Help me, O great Saint Benedict, to live and die as a faithful child of God, to be always subject to his holy will, to attain the eternal happiness of heaven. Amen."
