Pentecost is the third glorious mystery. The glorious mysteries invite us to meditate on the various events after the sorrowful mysteries. In this third glorious mystery, the Church invites us to meditate on the action of the Holy Spirit in the Church but also in our daily life.
It is in the book of the Acts of the Apostles that we can read the beautiful story of Pentecost.
When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.
Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard their own language being spoken. Utterly amazed, they asked: “Aren’t all these who are speaking Galileans? Then how is it that each of us hears them in our native language? Parthians, Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome (both Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs—we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!” Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, “What does this mean?”
Some, however, made fun of them and said, “They have had too much wine.”
Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and addressed the crowd: “Fellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem, let me explain this to you; listen carefully to what I say. These people are not drunk, as you suppose. It’s only nine in the morning! No, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel:
‘In the last days, God says,
I will pour out my Spirit on all people.
Your sons and daughters will prophesy,
your young men will see visions,
your old men will dream dreams.
(Acts 2:1-17)
The third glorious mystery is meditated on with the resurrection, ascension, assumption and coronation of the Virgin Mary. The Glorious Mysteries are usually recited on Wednesday and Sunday. The fruit of the mystery that the Church proposes to us is to live with the Holy Spirit and to appeal to him in all the actions that we must undertake in our day. The saints put us in good school by explaining to us through quotations the work of the Holy Spirit in our lives.
“The Holy Spirit is like a gardener who works on our soul... We only need to say 'Yes' and let ourselves be guided.” (Saint Curé d’Ars)
It is necessary to try to impregnate ourselves with the spirit of Jesus by reading and rereading, meditating and pondering constantly on his words and examples: may they penetrate our souls like a drop of water that falls and falls again [...] in the same place. (Saint Charles de Foucauld)
The Spirit that Christ poured out without limits gives us strength. The spirit is the secret of the Church today as it was for the Church of the early days. The Holy Spirit, the light that enlightens minds, is the true hope of the world. (Saint John Paul II)
