Meditate on the Mystery of the Ascension in the Prayer of the Rosary

The Ascension is the second glorious mystery. The glorious mysteries invite us to meditate on the various events after the sorrowful mysteries. In this second glorious mystery, the Church invites us to meditate on heaven and how to merit the heavenly joys after our death. The saints give us advice through the meditations they offer to pray the Rosary.

What is the second glorious mystery?

We can read two accounts of the ascension in the Gospels. Mark and Luke offer us several verses that we can read before taking a moment of silence to meditate on this glorious mystery.

The story of the ascension in the Bible

Then Jesus led them to Bethany, and lifting his hands to heaven, he blessed them. While he was blessing them, he left them and was taken up into heaven. Then they worshiped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy. And they stayed continually at the temple, praising God. (Luke 24:50-53)

And after the Lord Jesus had spoken to them, he was taken up into heaven and he sat at the right hand of God. Then the disciples went out and preached everywhere, and the Lord worked with them and confirmed his word by the signs that accompanied it. (Mark 16:15-20)

When and How to Recite the Second Glorious Mystery?

The third glorious mystery is meditated on with the resurrection, pentecost, assumption and coronation of the Virgin Mary. The Glorious Mysteries are usually recited on Wednesday and Sunday. The fruit of the mystery that the Church proposes to us is the desire for heaven. The saints invite us to live desiring heaven. The saints urge us to think often about our lives in order to be most faithful to the commandments of God.  We can follow their example by reciting this decade of the rosary or through other types of prayers.

Meditations and Quotes on the Mystery of Ascension

Living with a True Desire for Heaven

We are invited, like the apostles witnessing the Ascension, to fix our gaze on the face of Christ, enveloped in the splendor of divine glory. (Saint John Paul II)

“See, my children, we must reflect that we have a soul to save and an eternity awaiting us.” (Saint Curé d’Ars)

Loving Christ

Loving the Good Lord during your life is the greatest joy you can have on this earth, and the only one that will make us eternally happy in heaven. Life is a ladder where Jesus delights in raising souls up.” (Saint Bernadette)
