Kerizinen: Apparitions, Messages, Sanctuary, Prayers

Kerizinen is located in Brittany, in the Nord-Finistère region. This is where apparitions of the Holy Virgin took place. From September 15, 1938, to October 1, 1965, Jeanne-Louise Ramonet saw the Virgin Mary, Jesus Christ (71 apparitions precisely), and once the Holy Family reunited. She recorded the numerous messages received (65 in total) in notebooks that were later published.

To date, the Church has not recognized these apparitions.

History of the Apparitions

Who is Jeanne-Louise Ramonet?

Jeanne-Louise Ramonet was born on October 7, 1910, the fourth of nine children. Her family owned a small farm in the hamlet of Kerizinen in the commune of Plounévez-Lochrist. Life was poor and harsh. Frail in health, Jeanne-Louise did not leave the farm like her siblings. In 1936, she participated in the diocesan pilgrimage to Lourdes as a sick person and returned partially healed, enabling her to manage farm work.

The Apparitions

On September 15, 1938, the Feast of Our Lady of Sorrows, the first apparition occurred. Jeanne-Louise, aged 28, was tending cows in a field when a bright light appeared, revealing a beautiful Lady. Here is her description:

"*The Holy Virgin descended 6-7 meters above the ground. She wore a blue robe trimmed with white, falling below Her feet. Her belt, mantle, and veil were white. She stood upright with Her head slightly tilted left, hands joined at chest height, a rosary on Her right arm, illuminated.*"

The Lady told Jeanne-Louise:

"Do not fear. I mean you no harm. You will see me several times in the coming years, and then I will tell you who I am and what I ask. A new war threatens Europe. I will delay it by a few months, for I cannot ignore the many prayers for peace rising to me at Lourdes."

Subsequent apparitions occurred at the same location. Each time, Jeanne-Louise felt an inner call to return to the field. A distinctive fragrance perfumed the air during each visitation.

For a year, Jeanne-Louise told no one. On October 7, 1939, the second apparition occurred (see full message below). At the Virgin’s request, Jeanne-Louise then testified to her confessor. The apparitions remained undisclosed until 1947. In 1949, the first healing occurred (Madame Pauline Le Goff). News of the apparitions reached the diocese via newspapers, though Jeanne-Louise had always shared messages with local clergy. That year, the Virgin promised Jeanne-Louise a miraculous spring, which emerged in 1952 below the apparition site. Many graces were received through this water.

In 1949, a small glass shelter housing a Virgin statue was donated in thanksgiving for a healing and placed at the apparition site. A small oratory was built in 1956. Due to pilgrim numbers, a larger oratory was constructed in 1976, enclosing the original. In 1992, a day center (St. Joseph’s Welcome) opened. From 1947 until her death on February 19, 1995, Jeanne-Louise recited the Rosary daily with pilgrims. The Rosary is still prayed daily at 3 PM in the oratory.

Church Position

In 1956, Bishop Fauvel issued a first prohibition against Kerizinen, followed by a second in 1961. In 1969, the Roman Vicariate approved the Consecration Prayer to the Two United Hearts of Jesus and Mary. In 1973, Bishop Barbu issued a third prohibition; pilgrims petitioned him the following year. A dossier was submitted to the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith in 1975. That year, a fourth prohibition was declared. Despite this, pilgrim numbers grew steadily. Through donations, two oratories were built and privately blessed.

A Two United Hearts medal was struck in 1973, and the Children of Mary of Kerizinen group formed spontaneously in 1977. To date, no liturgical celebration has occurred in the oratory, though the Virgin explicitly requested:

"Insist again with religious authorities that the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass with reparative communion be celebrated here."

Messages Given by Jesus and Mary at Kerizinen

There are 65 messages. Devotion to the Two United Hearts of Jesus and Mary in the Holy Spirit is central. Some prophetic messages warn of grave dangers threatening the world, the Church, and France.

Message from the Second Apparition (October 7, 1939)

"The world ceaselessly offends God through grave sins, especially impurity, hence this war as punishment. But Heaven is not indifferent to such misery and offers salvation. Peace will come soon if you earn it through prayer, sacrifice, and penance. Gather children often to pray and recite the Rosary followed by the ‘Parce Domine’ for sinners. Speak to your director; publish this message. I will give his words supernatural power to touch hearts.

You, continue daily Rosary recitation, but meditate deeply on its mysteries—a Rosary without mysteries is a body without soul."

Message from October 7, 1940 (Feast of the Holy Rosary)

"I am the Mother of Christ, so loved in your parish. I wish to be honored here under the title ‘Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary."

Message from May 5, 1942

"Soon Russia will aid the war, striking your enemies. But from then on, pray fervently, Christian souls, for this great enemy of the Church. Otherwise, post-war communists will sit everywhere, even in France, harassing the Church. Ask Jesus through My Immaculate Heart for sinners’ return and Russia’s conversion.

Receive Communion on First Saturdays in honor of My Immaculate Heart—a request long ignored."
This message precisely reiterates Our Lady’s requests at Fatima, Portugal (1917).
