The Apparitions of the Virgin Mary in 2022
The Blessed Virgin Mary is undoubtedly the saint who has appeared the most frequently worldwide. The term “mariophany” refers to the unexpected appearance of the Mother of Christ (Marian apparitions). Some apparitions are officially recognized by the Catholic Church, while others are not, though devotion at the site of the alleged apparition is permitted, as are pilgrimages. Therefore, it is difficult to know the exact number of Marian apparitions that occur each year. Here are accounts of two apparitions in 2022, which are not officially recognized by the Church.
The Virgin Appeared in Nigeria
On June 22, 2022, in the city of Calabar, in southeastern Nigeria, an apparition of the Virgin Mary was witnessed by about a hundred people. Father Evaristus Bassey, from St. Charles Lwanga Parish in Calabar, explained that the Blessed Virgin appeared near the church, in front of over a hundred witnesses. A Protestant pastor was even present and photographed the apparition. He noted that the rays of light emanating from her were so bright that all photos and videos taken were of poor quality due to overexposure. The Virgin Mary reportedly moved to a nearby sanctuary dedicated to her before disappearing. The priest explained that the Mother of Jesus did not deliver a verbal message but, in his view, she simply wanted to remind and assure them of the Savior’s presence with them. He responded to this question by saying: “My dear, it was a surprise. Most people came for the delayed evening Adoration and were waiting. They were very impressed. The photos were taken by a Protestant pastor. And the lights around her were too bright for clear shots. It was a non-verbal message.”
The priest, cautious not to succumb to excitement and eager to uncover the truth, collected testimonies from all those present during the apparition. He learned that the Virgin’s appearance was preceded by a rainbow and a great ray of light. The Virgin Mary then appeared surrounded by light and moved toward the sanctuary.
The large number of witnesses and the many photographs taken have sparked curiosity and enthusiasm among the faithful. The Church, however, remains cautious about this event (photos are not considered sufficient evidence in a canonical investigation for recognizing an apparition).
Message from the Virgin Mary in Medjugorje on September 25, 2022
Every year, since June 24, 1981, and continuing to this day, the Virgin Mary has appeared in Medjugorje, Bosnia and Herzegovina. These apparitions are unprecedented in Church history.
The apparitions began when six children from the Medjugorje parish saw a very beautiful woman holding a baby on Podbrdo Hill. Afraid, they did not dare approach her. However, the next day, four of them returned, accompanied by two other children. They saw the Virgin Mary again, who introduced herself: “I am the Blessed Virgin Mary.” Since then, the group of six children has experienced daily apparitions, either together or separately. The Virgin gave them messages and the mission to spread them worldwide.
The children were not believed by everyone, but they were supported by Father Jozo Zovko, who also received a visit from the Virgin and was instructed by her to protect them.
Medjugorje quickly became a major pilgrimage site, and despite the years, the number of pilgrims continues to grow.
Today, the children are all married and continue to see the Virgin Mary daily. Some occasionally receive messages to share with the world. This is often the case for Marija Pavlovic, who receives a message for the world every 25th of the month, and Mirjana Dragicevic, who receives messages on the 2nd of each month.
Here is the message from the Mother of the Savior given to Marija Pavlovic on September 25, 2022, in Medjugorje:
“Dear children! Pray that the Holy Spirit may enlighten you and that you may become joyful seekers of God and witnesses of His boundless love. I am with you, little children, and I invite you once again: take courage and testify to the good works God is doing in you and through you. Do good to your neighbor to find peace on earth, and pray for peace, which is threatened, for Satan desires war and unrest. Thank you for responding to my call.”
