The rosary with Our Lady of Fatima

In Fatima, Portugal, Our Lady appeared 6 times in 1917 to 3 little shepherds. Every 13th of the month, Lucia, Francisco and Jacinta were visited by Our Lady, who spoke to them, taught them to pray and revealed secrets. Our Lady's main request at Fatima was to pray the rosary every day. On October 13, 1917, for the last apparition, Our Lady presented herself as Our Lady of the Rosary. During the 6 apparitions, Our Lady always wore a rosary and appeared after the children had begun reciting the rosary.

Here are Our Lady's words on praying the rosary, the peace rosary and the consolation and reparation rosary.

Words of Our Lady of Fatima concerning the rosary and the rosary.

  • "Recite the rosary every day to obtain peace in the world and the end of war" Our Lady of Fatima, May 13, 1917.
  • "I am Our Lady of the Rosary... We must recite the Rosary every day ... . Men must change their lives and ask forgiveness for their sins." Our Lady at Fatima, October 13, 1917.
  • "The Blessed Virgin has given new effectiveness to the recitation of the rosary. There is no problem, however difficult, temporal or especially spiritual, referring to the personal life of each one of us, our families, the families of the world or religious communities, or to the life of the Church. There is no problem, however difficult, that we cannot solve by praying the Holy Rosary. With the Holy Rosary we will save ourselves, we will sanctify ourselves, we will console Our Lord and obtain the salvation of many souls." Sister Lucia of Fatima to Father Fuentès, December 26, 1957.
  • "(The Blessed Virgin) told both my cousins and myself that God was giving the two last remedies to the world: the Holy Rosary and devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, and these being the last two remedies, it means that there will be no others" Sister Lucia of Fatima to Father Fuentès, December 26, 1957.
  • "The repetition of the Ave Maria, the Pater Noster and the Gloria Patri is the chain that lifts us up to God and binds us to Him, giving us a share in His divine life, just as the repetition of the mouthfuls of bread on which we feed sustains in us the natural life : and we don't call it old-fashioned! "Let the rosary be said every day." Our Lady repeated this in all her apparitions, as if to warn us against these times of disorientation, so that we don't let ourselves be deceived by false doctrines, and that by means of prayer, the elevation of our soul towards God doesn't diminish. The rosary is, after the Holy Liturgy of the Eucharist, the most appropriate prayer for preserving faith in souls." Sister Lucia of Fatima.

Fatima rosary for peace

At Fatima, Our Lady asked us to recite the rosary as taught by Christian tradition, meditating on the joyful, sorrowful and glorious mysteries. She said that praying the rosary would bring peace to the world and convert sinners. From this came the Fatima tradition of praying the rosary especially for world peace and for the decisions of political leaders. It can be prayed on a blue-grained rosary (Our Lady's color) on which the medal and cross represent the high points of the shrine. The traditional recitation of the mysteries includes the prayers revealed by the angel and the Virgin to the three little shepherds:

  • To begin the rosary, we recite the prayer of sacrifice:"O Jesus, it is for love of You, for the conversion of sinners, and in reparation for the sins committed against the Immaculate Heart of Mary that I pray."
  • After each Glory to the Father, Our Lady asked that this prayer be added:"O my Jesus, forgive us our sins, preserve us from the fire of hell, and lead to Heaven all souls, especially those most in need of your holy mercy."
  • The Fatima rosary can close with the prayer taught by the Angel: "My God, I believe, I adore, I hope and I love you. I ask your forgiveness for those who do not believe, who do not adore, who do not hope and who do not love you."

Fatima rosary of consolation and reparation

This rosary was created by a Dominican nun of the Perpetual Rosary whose convent is in Fatima. It is based on the prayers that the angel entrusted to the shepherds of Fatima. It is recited on a traditional rosary as follows:

  • On the cross, recite I believe in God.
  • On the next three beads, recite the Act of Contrition.
  • On the large beads, the prayer taught by the angel is said: "Most Holy Trinity, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, I adore You profoundly, and I offer You the most precious Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus Christ, present in all the tabernacles of the earth, in reparation for the outrages, sacrileges and indifferences by which He Himself is offended. Through the infinite merits of His most Sacred Heart and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, I ask You for the conversion of poor sinners."
  • On the little beads, say this prayer taught by the angel: "My God, I believe, I adore, I hope and I love You. I ask Your forgiveness for those who do not believe, who do not adore, who do not hope and who do not love You."
  • After each decade, say this prayer taught by Our Lady: "O my Jesus, forgive us our sins, preserve us from the fire of hell, and lead to Heaven all souls, especially those most in need of Your mercy."
  • Finally, recite 3 times, "Holy God, Holy Strong One, Holy Immortal One, have mercy on us and on the whole world."
