The Lourdes apparitions and praying the rosary
From the very first apparition of the Virgin Mary to Saint Bernadette Soubirous on February 11, 1858, Our Lady showed the importance of the rosary, wearing one on her arm and praying it with the little girl. Bernadette reports: "I looked up at the grotto. I saw a lady dressed in white: she had a white dress and a blue sash and a yellow rose on each foot, the color of her rosary chain. [...] I passed my rosary; the vision made the grains of hers run, but she didn't move her lips. At the second apparition, Bernadette began praying the rosary alone, then continued with the Lady, who left once she had finished. At all subsequent apparitions, little Bernadette reciteed the rosary with the Lady. Praying the rosary was one of Our Lady's most important teachings during the 18 apparitions at Lourdes. Our Lady recommends this simple but powerful prayer to everyone.
The six decades Lourdes rosary
The so-called "Bernadette Soubirous rosary" contains six decades, unlike the traditional Dominican rosary, which has 5. The little seeress in the Massabielle grotto made it clear that the apparition was carrying a six decades rosary on her arm. According to this indication, all statues and faithful representations of Our Lady of Lourdes wear a 6-tens rosary. This is the rosary of the Immaculate Conception, but it is also the traditional Pyrenean rosary, prayed from the Basque country to Andorra, with the sixth decade used to pray for souls in purgatory.
