"Père Charbel multipliait les signes de la sainte croix… je lui demandais : "mon maître, Père Charbel, pourquoi multipliez-vous aujourd’hui les signes de la croix, contrairement à votre habitude? Est ce qu’on tire un grand profit en le faisant?" D’un visage rempli de joie, il lui répondit: "aujourd’hui, c’est le vendredi des défunts. Le signe de la croix y est un grand trésor d’indulgences que le gagnant peut offrir en soutien aux pauvres âmes en souffrance au purgatoire, de qui personne ne se souvient. Chaque fois que tu fais le signe de la croix avec foi et que tu es en état de grâce, tu gagnes 50 jours d’indulgence, si tu entres à l’église, tu en sors, aspergeant la tête d’eau bénite et faisant le signe de la croix et que tu es en état de grâce, tu gagnes 100 jours d’indulgence, parfois; chaque fois que tu dis "O Marie!" tu gagnes 25 jours d’indulgence; si, par exemple, tu fais le signe de la croix 20 fois, le jour, tu gagnes mille indulgence; en offrant toutes ses indulgences pour le repos d’une ou plusieurs âmes souffrant au purgatoire, combien tu auras soulagé leurs souffrances! Mais combien tu auras gagné en revanche, des compensations multiples pour ce faire! Est-ce que cela te coûtera de la fatigue? – non.

L’homme qui peine dans le travail de sa propriété, l’irrigant de la sueur de son front, puis attend un an ou presque pour en tirer un peu de récolte; malgré cela si sa récolte est abondante, il en sera au comble de sa joie; mieux vaut pour lui invoquer la Vierge par son nom, en l’appelant avec vénération: "Ō Marie!" cent fois par jour, et voilà qu’il  gagnera 2500 jours d’indulgence sans se fatiguer, sans se gêner; et puis il peut continuer normalement son travail, sans rien interrompre; ainsi en sera-t-il bénéficiaire, et assurera le repos aux âmes du purgatoire et raccourcira le temps de leur souffrance; aussi, se retranche-t-il derrière ce grand nom contre toute tentation satanique. Si l’homme finit par s’habituer au signe de la croix et à l’invocation de la Vierge, il aura diminué toute sorte de tentation. Le signe de la croix est un moyen pour chasser les démons, le nom de la Vierge les subjugue et les repousse dans l’abîme de la ruine. Si tu veux m’écouter, pratique toujours une dévotion pour aider les âmes du purgatoire; car en cela tu prêtes à Dieu, et l’Écriture Sainte dit: "Qui donne au pauvre, prête à Dieu". Qui ne laisse pas tomber la récompense pour un verre d’eau fraîche, offert en son nom; que serait-ce pour la récompense d’un grand bienfaiteur à l’âme la plus chère pour lui et qui souffre, en cela son salut est sûr et elle est dans le besoin de raccourcir le temps de son purgatoire».

The man who toil in the work of his property, irrigating it of the sweat of his forehead, then waits for a year or almost to earn a little harvest; despite this, if his harvest is abundant, he will be at the height of his joy. It is better for him to invoke the Virgin by Her name, calling her with veneration : " O Mary!" a hundred times a day, and now he will gain 2 500 days of indulgence without getting tired, without bothering. Then he may normally continue his work without interruption. Thus he will be a beneficiary, and rest for the souls of purgatory and shorten the time of their suffering. Also, he is hiding behind this great name against all Satanic temptation. If the man gets used to the sign of the cross and the invocation of the Virgin, he will have reduced all kinds of temptation. The sign of the cross is a way to hunt demons, the name of the Virgin subjugates them and repel them in the abyss of ruin. If you want to listen to me, always practice a devotion to help the souls of purgatory. The Holy Scriptures says: "who gives to the poor, lend to God". Who will not give up the reward for a glass of fresh water, offered in his name; what would be for the reward of a great benefactor with the most expensive soul for him and who suffers. In that his salvation is safe.
