The Apostles and the Virgin Mary were in deep prayer for the nine days preceding the coming of the Holy Spirit. Since then, Christians traditionally offer a novena to the Holy Spirit between Ascension day and the feast of Pentecost. Praying this novena helps us to open up ourselves to the third person of the Trinity and receive his many graces.
The novena can be started on the day of Ascension so that it can be completed just the day before the Pentecost.
Each day, for nine days, you can choose to say one of the following prayers:
And to finish you can say 1 Our Father, 1 Hail Mary and 1 Glory Be.
On the last day of the novena you can add a beautiful prayer to the Holy Spirit, for example by praying the act of Consecration.
In a world that is ever changing and where we may feel more and more alone, join us for Christian unity, where we come together as brothers and sisters in Christ, for Pentecost, asking the Holy Spirit to fill us and give us the gifts necessary to proclaim his victory.
Come discover the Holy Spirit as well as different Christian traditions with an Anglican priest “Nicky Gumble” who created the Alpha Course, the Orthodox Archbishop of London, another Anglican priest and a Irish Dominican priest from Trinidad and Tobago. For nine days, each will give a 5 minute podcast on the Holy Spirit. After each podcast you will also receive a prayer and a song.
Unity for Pentecost 2020
“On my knees before the great multitude of heavenly witnesses, I offer myself soul and body to Thee, Eternal Spirit of God. I adore the brightness of Thy purity, the unerring keenness of Thy justice, and the might of Thy love. Thou art the Strength and Light of my soul. In Thee I live and move and am. I desire never to grieve Thee by unfaithfulness to grace, and I pray with all my heart to be kept from the smallest sin against Thee. Mercifully guard my every thought and grant that I may always watch for Thy light and listen to Thy voice and follow Thy gracious inspirations. I cling to Thee and give myself to Thee and ask Thee by Thy compassion to watch over me in my weakness. Holding the pierced Feet of Jesus and looking at His Five Wounds and trusting in His Precious Blood and adoring His opened Side and stricken Heart, I implore Thee Adorable Spirit, helper of my infirmity, so to keep me in Thy grace that I may never sin against Thee. Give me grace O Holy Ghost, Spirit of the Father and the Son, to say to Thee always and everywhere, "Speak Lord, for Thy servant heareth."
