Mardi Gras: origin, meaning and prayer

Shrove Tuesday is a day of pancakes and masquerade costume for children. A festive day, Shrove Tuesday is above all a time for fun and relaxation with family and friends. It's often a very joyful day before Lent begins, which is characterized by penitence and efforts to be kept up for 40 days. Discovering or rediscovering the origins of Mardi Gras helps us to better understand this day and to see how we can live it as Christians, giving thanks for this festive time before Ash Wednesday and the sobriety of Lent .

The origins of Shrove Tuesday and Carnival

Shrove Tuesday is a festive and culinary day marking the end of the Carnival period and the last day before the start of Christian Lent. This tradition is celebrated with parades, disguises and the consumption of fatty and sweet foods such as pancakes, doughnuts and waffles, symbolizing abundance before deprivation. The date of this festival is mobile, falling 47 days before Easter .

The holiday has ancient (pagan) roots. Its origins can be traced back to the Roman festivals of antiquity, such as the Saturnalia and the Calendae of March. These celebrations marked the end of winter and the arrival of spring. They were characterized by a symbolic inversion of the social order (slaves feasted with their masters) and banquets.

Eggs and meat-free

Christianity gradually superimposed this festive period on the eve of Lent (40 days of fasting and penance before Easter). For many years, eggs and meat were not allowed during Lent. Fat Tuesday meals were therefore intended to finish off the provisions that could not be eaten during the 40 days before Easter.

What is Fat Tuesday for Christians?

Shrove Tuesday is a feast day for Christians too. It's a day marked by fattier, more festive meals. It's a day that's often seen as the one on which anything goes, because the following day, fasting and abstinence give a more sober tone to our days. This festive day should be lived as a time of grace, before a privileged time that brings us closer to God.

A prayer for Mardi Gras and Carnival

"Lord Jesus, I want to entrust to you this day of joy, all the moments we're going to share with family and friends. Come and bless these sweet little dishes we've prepared. This time of joy is also a preparation for the time of penitence that awaits us starting tomorrow. Thank you in advance for this blessed time, which aims to bring us closer and closer to you. Amen.
