Mid-Lent, a pause in preparation for Easter

Lent is a 40-day period of penitence. For Catholics, the Church punctually requires days of fasting and abstinence. During this period of great sobriety, certain days allow us to "break Lent" and celebrate certain events. These include the Annunciation (a feast commemorating the appearance of the angel Gabriel to the Virgin Mary) and the solemnity of St. Joseph's Day , if these feasts fall during Lent. Mid-Lent is one of those days when Christians take a break.

What is Mid-Lent?

For Christians

Mid-Lent is not a religious holiday. At mass, in the prayers read by the priest, nothing changes. Purple remains the liturgical color. Christians see mid-Lent as a time for taking stock at the halfway point. As the aim of Lent is a time of conversion in preparation for the feast of Christ's resurrection, it's a good idea to take stock in the middle to adjust efforts. Some may be too hard on themselves, others haven't really started Lent... So this is the day to get back on track.

Traditionally

For a very long time, it was not possible to eat meat or eggs during Lent. But one day in the middle of Lent is an exception. This day, known as "mid-Lent", is similar to MardiGras . Eat fatty foods, celebrate: anything goes. And so, over the years, a tradition has taken root: pancakes and other sweet and fatty foods are prepared for this day.

What's for mid-Lent?

At Mid-Lent, it's customary to have a fattier-than-usual meal, a bit like that of Shrove Tuesday. Some people make pancakes. In some towns, bugnes and other doughnuts are on the menu. There's no fasting or abstinence on this day.
