Who is Saint Fermin of Amiens?
Saint Fermin of Amiens, also known as Fermin of Pamplona—in honor of his hometown—was the son of a Roman senator who converted to Christianity. He was raised by Honoratus of Toulouse, the city’s bishop. Fermin was later baptized by Saint Saturninus of Toulouse, Honoratus’s predecessor.
The future saint was ordained a priest in Toulouse before returning temporarily to Pamplona. After this brief stay, he set out to evangelize Gaul, first in Agen, in what is now southwestern France, and then in Auvergne. He converted large numbers of people.He later traveled to Angers, then to Beauvais, where he encountered the pagan prefect Valère, who persecuted him. Finally, he arrived in Amiens, where he was warmly welcomed by Senator Faustinien, whom he succeeded in converting to Christianity. Fermin was credited with numerous miracles, such as the healings of a cripple, a leper, a blind man, a man with a fever, and a man possessed by a demon.
Unfortunately, in 303, the Roman emperors Maximian and Diocletian were in power and forced everyone to sacrifice to the pagan gods and renounce the Catholic faith. Realizing that Fermin had managed to convert 3,000 people in just three days, the authorities grew suspicious of him. He was then imprisoned in a dungeon in Amiens, on the orders of Governor Sebastianus
Saint Fermin was beheaded on September 25, 303, for his love of Christ. His body was buried by Faustinien, whose son would later become a bishop under the name Fermin the Confessor.
