Our Lady of the Smile
What penetrated to the depth of my soul was our Lady's wonderful smile.
(St Thérèse of Lisieux)
Saint Thérèse was ten years old when she became gravely ill and her family was very worried. They all prayed very hard to our Blessed Lady for her. One day, Thérèse saw the statue of Mary smiling at her. She got better in the next few hours. Our Lady's smile had brought her back to life.
In Mary's smile we can see all her love. Like Thérèse, let's allow ourselves to be cured by our mother's tender smile.
Even if I don't see the little statue in my prayer-corner smiling at me, I know it's true: Mary is there, close to me. She lights up my life with her motherly smile.
You are the safe port
for all shipwrecked sailors.
You are the mother of all orphans.
You are the hand
that breaks the chains.
You are the joy of the sick.
You are the smile returning to sad faces.
You are the sun of mankind,
O Mary, always.
(St Ephraim)
