The Second Station: Jesus Receives His Cross

Main post image

THE SECOND STATION

Begin with an Act of Contrition

O my God, because you are so good, I am very sorry that I have sinned against you and by the help of your grace I will not sin again.

V. We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you.

R. Because by your holy Cross you have redeemed the world.

Jesus Receives His Cross

A strong, and therefore heavy, Cross, for it is strong enough to bear Him on it when He arrives at Calvary, is placed upon His torn shoulders. He receives it gently and meekly, no, with gladness of heart, for it is to be the salvation of mankind.

True; but recollect, that heavy Cross is the weight of our sins. As it fell upon His neck and shoulders, it came down with a shock. Alas! what a sudden, heavy weight have I laid upon You, O Jesus! And though in the calm and clear foresight of Your mind - for You see all things - You were fully prepared for it, yet Your feeble frame tottered under it when it dropped down upon You. Ah! how great a misery is it that I have lifted up my hand against my God! How could I ever imagine He would forgive me unless He had Himself told us that He underwent His bitter Passion in order that he might forgive us. I acknowledge, O Jesus, in the anguish and agony of my heart, that it was my sins that struck You on the face, that bruised Your sacred arms, that tore Your flesh with iron rods, that nailed You to the Cross, and let You slowly die upon it.

Concluding Prayers:

Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory be to the Father.

V. Have mercy on us, O Lord.

R. Have mercy on us.

May the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

Prayer of St John Henry Newman

O God, give me grace at this time duly to confess my sins before you, and truly to repent of them. Blot out of your book, gracious Lord, all my manifold acts of sin committed against you. Forgive me all my wanderings in prayer, my sins of omission, my deliberate sins against conscience. Give me eyes to see what is right, and a heart to follow it, and strength to perform it; and grant that I may in all things press forward in the work of sanctification and ever do your will, and at length through your mercy attain to the glories of your everlasting kingdom through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Thank you! 113 people prayed

Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer everyone. Col 4:6
