Recognise God in each other

Ecclesiasticus  48:11.

“Happy shall they be who see you.”

A crucial activity during the weeks of Advent is Interiority. That is, making use of the weeks of Advent for personal prayer, meditation and further discovering the God within each of us.

In the Gospel for today's Mass, (Matthew 17:10-13) Jesus as teacher experiences the difficulties and frustrations of many teachers, namely people not listening. Jesus repeatedly throughout the Gospels wants us not only to see the God within us but also to recognise God in each other. This as we know only too well, can be difficult. As we come closer to Christmas, let us acknowledge that Jesus comes into our world in order to be the saviour of all humanity.

By way of conclusion a final thought from St Augustine, who does not want that just, I am awake, but that everyone is awake during Advent and so ready for Christ's coming at Christmas and again at the end of time.

“Come Lord! Wake us up! Call us back to you! Set our hearts on fire and draw us to You…….…Let us love You. Let us run to You.”

May we after our Advent preparations, be ready to run to see the infant Jesus in the crib, at Christmas and be awake to welcome the Christ Jesus on the last day.

Nativity Prayer of St Augustine

Let the just rejoice, for their Justifier is born. Let the sick and infirm rejoice, for their Savior is born. Let the captives rejoice, for their Redeemer is born. Let slaves rejoice, for their Master is born. Let free men rejoice, for their Liberator is born. Let all Christians rejoice, for Jesus Christ is born. St Augustine of Hippo (AD 354-440)

Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer everyone. Col 4:6
