Day 8 - Laudato Si', A Paradigm Shift!

Once Upon a Time…

In 2015, the encyclical Laudato Si “saving our common home” was published. It is much more than a simple book on ecology in the strict sense of the term. Laudato Si is a criticism of the evolution of societies globalisation and neo liberal policies. It calls for a “paradigm shift”! Pope Francis proposes that we head towards an integral form of ecology that means creating new models of development, leaving behind economic growth at any price!

Laudato Si marks a new way of thinking for the Church, not because of what it evokes but its synthesis that is a result of the Pope's powerful global reflection.

Global ecology was recently spoken of during the Synod on the Amazon, a region of the world that is confronted with huge environmental, societal and pastoral issues.

A Saying…

A superficial ecology is developing and consolidating a certain apathy and an unaccountable irresponsibility for our planet.

“A superficial ecology is developing and consolidating a certain apathy and an unaccountable irresponsibility for our planet. Since this usually happens during times of profound crisis needing brave decisions, we have a tendency to believe that what is actually happening isn't sure. If we look only on the surface, just beyond the visible signs of pollution and degradation, it looks as if nothing is that bad and that the planet could subsist for a long time under the present conditions. This “ostrich approach” allows us to continue maintaining our current lifestyles in production and consumption. This is human nature's approach in its auto-destructive behaviour by avoiding to look; by fighting not to recognize the problems, and by delaying important decisions and acting as if nothing was wrong.”  Encyclique Laudato si n° 59.

A Prayer…

Today let us pray for the Church and all Christians participate as they can to maintain the “paradigm shift”. May the Church by its words and examples, encourage the world to abandon their lifestyle of consumption, exploitation and waste and embrace the lifestyle of giving, sharing and living simply.

Three ways to pray for this intention:
1. I click immediately on the tab “I pray” just below, and I carefully read the “prayer to the Holy Spirit for Pope Francis”
2. I say 10 Hail Marys and I click on the tab “I pray”
3. I offer 3 minutes of silence, heart to heart, with God, then I click on the tab “I pray”

Community prayer

Prayer to the Holy Spirit for our Holy Father, Pope Francis!

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace; where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; and where there is sadness, joy. O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console; to be understood, as to understand; to be loved, as to love; for it is in giving that we receive, it is in pardoning that we are pardoned, and it is in dying that we are born to Eternal Life. Amen.
