September 13th, Saint John Chrysostom
Saint John Chrysostom
The Golden Mouth
Doctor of the Roman Catholic Church, the Orthodox Church and the Coptic Church, this son of the Antioch bourgeoisie first lived a disorderly youth. Gifted for oratory and drama, he was popular in society circles and took much delight in them... until he met a bishop who revealed the love of Christ to him. Deeply touched, he was baptized at age 18 and became a priest, attacking his former admirers and condemning all forms of licentiousness. He attracted the enmity of the upper classes and worldly bishops. Marginalized, he remained faithful to his Lord and continued to the end, with great inner freedom, to defend the Truth of the Loving God!
