Daily verse:

"Rejoice in hope, endure in affliction, persevere in prayer." Romans 12,12

The life of St. Frances:

As in each one of her new foundations, Frances is met with the usual difficulties and obstacles. Archbishop Corrigan is surprised, as he isn't expecting her that early. He suggests that she goes back to Italy, but Frances replies that she could not, in obedience to the Pope, who sent her to New York.

Even worse, the missionaries of St. Charles Borromeo didn't prepare anything for the sisters' arrival, not even a temporary place to live. A convent, offered by an Italian countess, hasn't met the Archbishop's approval yet. The group of nuns spends their first night in America in a filthy shelter in the heart of the Italian ghetto, wide awake and exhausted, yet hopeful and prayerful.

The following day, the Sisters of Charity offer illimited housing to the missionaries and guide them in their first steps around the big city.

Quote by St. Frances:

If you are in danger, if your hearts are confused, turn to Mary; she is our comfort, our help; turn towards her, and you will be saved.

Frances probably prayed to Mary when she found herself resourceless in New York. Mary made sure that Frances would always find a solution, even if the situation seemed desperate.

Prayer:

Teach me, my Lord, to be sweet and gentle in all the events of my life, in disappointments, in the thoughtlessness of others, in the insincerity of those I trusted, in the unfaithfulness of those on whom I relied. Let me forget myself so that I may enjoy the happiness of others. Let me always hide my little pains and heartaches so that I may be the only one to suffer from them. Teach me to profit by the suffering that comes across my path. Let me so use it that it may mellow me, not harden or embitter me; that it may make me patient, not irritable; that it may make me broad in my forgiveness, not narrow or proud or overbearing. May no one be less good for having come within my influence; no one less pure, less true, less kind, less noble, for having been a fellow traveler with me on our journey towards eternal life. As I meet with one cross after another, let me whisper a word of love to You. May my life be lived in the supernatural, full of power for good, and strong in its purpose of sanctity. Amen.
