Litany of the Saints

Main post image

With the upcoming Solemnity of All Saints day, I'll be presenting the Litany of the Saints, traditional recitation. It is believed to be the oldest litany, as it was already mentioned in the 4th century by Saint Basil. Pope Gregory the Great prescribed it in 590 for a public procession of thanksgiving after a fierce episode of plague in Rome. Similarly, it was used in the procession of St. Mamertus, Bishop of Vienna. As such, it is one of the only six litanies authorized for use in public service. This litany is often recited on All Saints Day, Easter Vigil, Ordination and Baptism Masses.

If prayed in group settings, the group responds to the leader with the italicized words.

Lord, have mercy, Christ, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy, Christ, hear us, Christ, graciously hear us.
God, the Father of Heaven, have mercy on us.
