Day Three: Saint Charbel, love of the other
His love for his fellow man was pure and intense, and not based on personal affinities he may or may not have with one individual. Whenever he saw someone, a servant or a colleague, perform an exhausting task, he would run up to the person and say "Let me do it for you." He would then tackle the job. Regularly, he asked the Father Superior for permission to assist his co-workers, even though he didn't have to. He didn't display any preference for any labor or any person in particular. He behaved as if everyone was his superior.
When visitors came to the monastery, he didn't mingle with them. He was content to offer them his prayers. Likewise, he prayed for the sick with all his heart and visited them, at the command of the Father Superior.
He loved unconditionally every person he met. He never showed contempt or disdain, fulfilled his obligations towards others with devotion. He was hard on himself, yet generous and merciful to others.
Testimonies from fellows who lived alongside him in the convent of St. Maron in Annaya depict an impartial, discreet man who finished all unfulfilled tasks in the convent without a word. Very disparate people lived and worked in and around the convent, but they all agree on one truth: they all loved Charbel deeply.
St. Charbel, teach us to always love the others and serve them with joy, just as you did, no matter how different from us they might be. In Jesus' name, Amen.
