Saint Rita
Unfaltering hope
Married against her wishes to an abusive unbeliever, her kindness brought about his conversion. She preferred to see her two sons die rather than guilty of avenging their father's murder. Her prayer was granted: both succumbed to the plague on the same day! Left alone, she wanted to enter a convent, only to be rejected many times. She refused to yield to discouragement: a miracle finally persuaded the nuns to accept her. After the sorrows of a troubled marriage, she received the stigmata on her forehead, from a thorn of Christ's own crown. To obtain graces for hopeless causes, Rita shared in Jesus' passion and bore this wound of love until her death.
