Feast of St Wulstan

St Wulstan was a benedictine monk who became Bishop of Worcester during the 11th Century in UK.  He was known for being the first Bishop to have made systematic visitations in his Diocese.  He encouraged building of Churches to enable the people working on the land to attend Mass.  He took part and succeeded in the abolition of a slave trade between Bristol and the pagan lands of Ireland.  He had a habit of repeating lines of the office that particularly appealed to him.  He was also known for washing the feet of the poor and being generous to those in need.  He was keen to maintain concentration during prayer time and, once distracted from prayer by the good smell of a goose being roasted, vowed never to eat meat again if he could be freed of the temptation. As a result he is invoked as the patron saint of vegetarians. He survived the Norman invasion in 1066 and became a trusted advisor of William the Conqueror.

Lord, we thank you for the life of St Wulstan, an example in his determination to see right being done.  St Wulstan, pray for us to be as single minded as is possible to us, in our pursuit of Jesus and our love for our fellowman.  Amen.
