St. John the Evangelist (Ist century)
The friend to whom one can confide anything!
John was the first to follow the One that John the Baptist designated as "the Lamb of God."
At the Last Supper, as he leans on the heart of Jesus, he hears in confidence the name of the betrayer. On Calvary, he is the only one of the Twelve to witness the crucifixion… and Jesus entrusts his Mother to him. On Easter morning, he arrives at the tomb before Peter: "He sees and believes."
The purity of his love gives him the eyes of an eagle. In the evening of his life he is given to contemplate the Apocalypse, this unfolding of Salvation history until the coming of the New Jerusalem. All he can say after that, and never tires of repeating, is: "God is love."
