Morning prayer of Saint Francis of Assisi

St. Francis of Assisi' s eyes were wide open to the beauty and goodness of God, which he marveled at every day through Creation, and through the men and women he met. Leaving everything to follow Christ, he spread peace, brotherhood and joy. Among the manyprayers of St. Francis, there's one that's particularly well known: St. Francis' Morning Prayer. Starting the day with St. Francis of Assisi, turning to the Lord with this morning prayer, is a wonderful way to radiate God's beauty and love throughout the day!

Text of the morning prayer of Saint Francis of Assisi

"Lord, in the silence of this dawning day, I come to ask you for peace, wisdom and strength.
 I want to look at the world today with eyes filled with love; to be patient, understanding, gentle and wise;
 to see your children beyond appearances, as you see them yourself, and so see only the good in everyone.
 Close my ears to all slander, guard my tongue from all malice, and let only blessing thoughts dwell in my mind.
 May I be so benevolent and joyful that all who approach me feel your power and presence.
 Clothe me with your beauty, Lord, and may I reveal you throughout the day.
 So be it."

How and why pray in the morning?

Morning prayer allows us to entrust our day to the Lord. Before launching into our various activities, prayer gives us time for ourselves and for God. It allows us to take a step back from our daily lives and recharge our batteries with Our Heavenly Father, so that we can start our day full of confidence and energy. Our morning prayer can be an opportunity to:

  • praise Him for His greatness and goodness,
  • give thanks to God for the day ahead and for all that lies ahead,
  • to ask God to send us his Spirit to live each moment with him, and to help us face any difficulties or moments we may be apprehensive about,
  • to entrust him with a particular intention: a person we're about to meet or a task we're going to do today.

There are many ways to pray in the morning, depending on how we feel and how much time we have. Reciting a prayer, like that of St. Francis of Assisi or the Lord's Prayer, addressing God in our own words or simply remaining silent and listening to him, reading a short passage from the Bible... whatever! God simply wants to spend a little time with His child. (Discover different prayers and ways of praying to get your day off to a good start!)

In the same way, it's a good idea to end the day with a time of prayer. Here, too, St. Francis can accompany us with an evening prayer. (Find many other evening prayers to recite before bedtime).
