The Apparitions of Saints

The saints and the blessed are the deceased who have entered Paradise. These souls are in heavenly beatitude, and it happens that the Lord grants them to appear to human beings for a particular purpose. Most of the time it is the Virgin Mary who appears, or even Christ himself. However, saints can also appear. Discover the saints who have appeared in history!

Apparitions of saints over the course of history

Apparitions of saints seem to be linked to their degree of holiness on Earth; indeed, it seems that the greatest saints appear the most. Many apparitions are recorded of Saint Michael the Archangel, of Saint Joseph, but also of Saint Anne, mother of the Blessed Virgin. Then we also note apparitions of Saint Thérèse of the Child Jesus, of the holy apostles, of Padre Pio, of Saint Dominic Savio, of Saint Charbel, etc. Discover some of these beautiful apparitions of saints.

Apparition of Saint Dominic Savio to Don Bosco

Saint Dominic Savio died at 15; he was the pupil of Don Bosco, who had great affection for him. Twenty years after the young boy’s death, and according to the promise he had made to Don Bosco when saying good-bye, Dominic came to visit him. Here is their exchange:

“God sends me to you, Don Bosco, to speak to you; I am in Paradise, in the land of happiness.

— What is that light that surrounds you?

— It is a natural light, a little brighter. But the light of Heaven is infinitely brighter.”

Dominic then recounts the beauties of Paradise. He shows Don Bosco a magnificent bouquet of flowers he is holding in his hand:

“Each of these different flowers represents the virtues preferred by the Lord.”

— And which one does Jesus love above all?

— Love for the Blessed Virgin. Tell all your boys to pray to her a great deal. She is all-powerful with Jesus, especially at the hour of death.”

Apparition of Saint Charbel to three children

In Lebanon, three children from a Muslim family were alone at home while their mother stayed at the hospital with their sick sister. They were about to spend the night by themselves and were afraid. Then an old imam came in; he wore a long black robe, a hood on his head, and a white beard. He reassured the children and set about taking care of the house. He lit the kerosene stove, prepared a pot of rice pudding, and had the children do their homework, constantly reassuring them. Finally, the mother came home, and her eldest daughter ran to her, asking, “Did you see the imam leaving?” “No,” the mother replied in surprise, “what imam?” The child told her everything the old man had done to help them, and the mother noticed, in fact, that the pot of rice pudding was still hot on the stove. Grateful, she praised the Lord for having provided in her absence.

Shortly afterward, during a visit to a Christian friend, the little girl exclaimed on seeing an image of Saint Charbel hanging on the wall, “That’s him, Mom—the imam who came the other evening!”

O Saint Charbel, you are the protector of frightened children. You warm them, feed them, and accompany them until their parents return.

Other manifestations of saints on Earth

While it remains rare for saints to appear to people in their physical appearance, manifestations of their presence are more frequent. They appear in dreams or make their voice heard. Saint Lucy of Syracuse saw and heard Saint Agatha of Catania in a dream. Many have sensed delightful fragrances manifesting the presence of Padre Pio. Saint Carlo Acutis appeared in a dream to his mother, who bears witness to this on many occasions today. Marcel Van had a privileged relationship with Saint Thérèse of Lisieux, who spoke to him. Not to mention Saint Joan of Arc, who heard Saint Catherine of Alexandria and Saint Margaret of Antioch speak to her many times. These supernatural manifestations of the saints are sometimes followed by miracles and healings. Moreover, these saints are tasked with spiritually guiding souls on Earth.

Apparitions of saints to mystics

Certain souls live an intense mystical life, a relationship of great intimacy with Jesus in which the supernatural is a habitual feature of their life. These mystical souls, described by Jesus as victim-souls, suffer for the salvation of humanity and are identified with Jesus in their suffering. To support them in their mission, they receive great spiritual help from Jesus himself, from the Virgin Mary, and from all the saints in Heaven, who manifest themselves through apparitions, locutions, etc. Such is the case of Maria Valtorta, who saw a very large number of saints and martyrs, of Luisa Piccarreta, etc.
