Advent Retreat with Cardinal Thomas

The season of Advent is rich in reminders of the true meaning of the coming of Christ. The ancient hymns of Advent, such as “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel”, and “O Come, Divine Messiah.”

Each day of Advent Cardinal Collins will share with us insights for the season. Some of the rituals and customs such as the lighting of the candles of the Advent Wreath are memorable expressions of our faith, and of the hope in the midst of struggle which allows us to flourish joyfully as disciples of Jesus, whose coming we celebrate at Christmas, and prepare for in Advent. This is not only a joyful, but also a penitential season since,  if we are honest with ourselves, we must admit that we are not really ready to meet the Lord who comes.

Prayer from the retreat

Come Lord Jesus

Lord Jesus, Master of both the light and the darkness, send your Holy Spirit upon our preparations for Christmas. We who have so much to do and seek quiet spaces to hear your voice each day, We who are anxious over many things look forward to your coming among us. We who are blessed in so many ways long for the complete joy of your kingdom. We whose hearts are heavy seek the joy of your presence. We are your people, walking in darkness, yet seeking the light. To you we say, "Come Lord Jesus!' Amen. - Henri J.M. Nouwen
