What is Advent for Christians?

The Church's liturgy gives the name Advent to the four weeks leading up to Christmas, as an opportunity to prepare ourselves in hope for the coming of the Lord. It is also a privileged period for Christians as it invites us to remember the past, encourages us to live in the present and to prepare for the future.

ADVENT by the hand of Our Lady of Guadalupe

Every year, this time is enriched by various celebrations, among them the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe on 12 December, which in the heart of Advent, the "Tepeyac" is like "Bethlehem", where the Virgin brought the sun that illuminates the darkness of the night, the Good News because a Saviour has been born to us, Jesus Christ, of whom St. Juan Diego is the angel who announced to all without exception.

Moreover, considering the Virgin of Guadalupe in our reflection is very important given that since 12 December 2022, Pope Francis has pointed out that in 2031 it will be 500 years since the Guadalupan Event, that is, that tender and loving encounter in 1531, between Our Lady of Guadalupe and Saint Juan Diego in whom the whole world is represented.

Why join this community?

The Holy Father invited us to begin a 9-year journey through the Intercontinental Guadalupana Novena, which, as an evangelising process, seeks in its main objective that people can meet God again through the Virgin of Guadalupe, seeking new ways in the reconstruction of the social and ecclesial fabric of our towns and communities, to celebrate together the Guadalupana Event.

The Novena is an invitation to live this reunion with God, not only around the month of December or only on the 12th of December when we celebrate the Guadalupana, but also throughout the liturgical year, at different times and especially on Marian feasts, such as this Advent 2023.

If you join, you will receive:

  • 4 moments of personal and community reflection, one for each Sunday of Advent, to prepare the heart for the birth of Jesus Christ the Redeemer, son of Mary of Guadalupe, the Mother of the true God for whom we live.

Retreat prayer

Prayer to Our Lady of Guadalupe by Saint John Paul II

Our Lady of Guadalupe, Mother of the Americas, we pray to you for all the Bishops, that they may lead the faithful along paths of intense Christian life, of love and humble service to God and to souls. Behold this immense harvest, and intercede that the Lord may instil a hunger for holiness in all God's people, and grant abundant vocations of priests and nuns, strong in the faith and zealous dispensers of the mysteries of God. Grant our homes the grace to love and respect the life that is beginning, with the same love with which you conceived in your womb the life of the Son of God. Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of Fair Love, protect our families so that they may always be very united, and bless the education of our children. Amen.
