Praying for our priests

Main post image

It has been reported that in Italy at least ten priests have died after contracting coronavirus and there are many more worldwide who are in serious conditions. Those priests who have not been physically affected by the virus, are feeling the effects through the surrounding worry/fear/zeal of their parishioners. Some have been accused of being complicit in the spread of the disease simply by saying Mass, some have been accused of having a lack of faith by limiting the availability of the Sacraments. We must remember that many of our priests are elderly or otherwise in the at-risk group and they put themselves on the 'front-line' by providing the Sacraments to their congregations. Priests also want to make sure they are well enough to provide anointing of the sick, visit lonely parishioners, hear confessions etc. May we always speak to our priests with kindness, praying for them continuously, most especially at this turbulent time.

Whatever we might think, we trust that our shepherds have our physical and spiritual health at the forefront of their hearts and minds. If they make a decision to continue or to stop celebrating public Masses, we should respect that, be grateful for their tireless work, and pray ever more for their ministry. It has been announced today in the UK that all public Masses will be suspended from Friday evening until further notice. Many of the faithful are devastated at the news, but we know that this decision has been made to ensure that we can get back to celebrating the Sacraments together as soon as possible. So many great initiatives have been taken by both priests and lay alike to ensure that those who are at home can feel as much a part of our global community now as ever. Priests are streaming their Masses live and recorded so that people can make an Act of Spiritual Communion. There are many reasons to hope, rejoice, and trust. Our physical bodies may be confined but our spiritual muscles can be used all the more.

Holy Spirit, be with our priests. Comfort, strengthen, and protect them. Give us Your gifts, particularly fortitude and understanding.

Saint John Vianney, pray for us and our priests. Amen.

Catholic Voices Prayer

God our Father, Bless and guide all those involved in Catholic Voices. Give us the gifts of the Holy Spirit that we need for this work, especially wisdom, gentleness, courage and joy. Help us to be faithful to Christ and to his Church, and to be open to the questions that people bring us. Help us to love and respect all those we meet. Support us in our difficulties and setbacks. May our words and the witness of our lives give you glory and help others to be more open to you. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen
