Something to see and something to believe

Matthew 1:16

And Jacob fathered Joseph the husband of Mary; of her was born Jesus who is called Christ.

Read the Gospel in full today. It's such a long genealogy to define the identity of Jesus! What is the point in naming all Jesus' ancestors? Is it to prove Jesus is the descendant of some of the greatest men of the Old Testament? Indeed, Matthew not only connected Jesus to David, but back yet further to Abraham. Jesus is the Seed of Abraham in whom all nations would be blessed (Genesis 12:3).

Our nations have waited for His coming, and God's promise is about to happen: in a week, Jesus will be born.

Augustine says in a sermon that “God became a human being, so that in one person you could have both something to see and something to believe.”

7 days to prepare our heart to see Jesus. 7 days to prepare our heart to believe in Jesus.

We've never been so close to Him.

Nativity Prayer of St Augustine

Let the just rejoice, for their Justifier is born. Let the sick and infirm rejoice, for their Savior is born. Let the captives rejoice, for their Redeemer is born. Let slaves rejoice, for their Master is born. Let free men rejoice, for their Liberator is born. Let all Christians rejoice, for Jesus Christ is born. St Augustine of Hippo (AD 354-440)

Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer everyone. Col 4:6
