Deepen your relationship with God

The Immaculate Conception

Psalm 97:1.

“Sing a new song to the Lord for he has worked wonders.”

The above quote from Psalm 97 captures the attitude of Mary when she hears from the Angel Gabriel, that she has  “won God's favour,” and that she will “conceive and bear a son, and you must name him Jesus.”

St Augustine once said, that anyone who has learned to love the new life has learned to sing a new song (Sermon 34, 1).

Mary gives us a great example of what our attitude should be as we seek to deepen our relationship with God at the beginning of this new liturgical year. Mary is alert, vigilant, waiting and ready to respond to her God, whatever his demands are of her. Her new song is the Magnificat which she proclaims having said “Let what you have said be done to me.”

Mary's response is of one who has learned to love the new life God has given her. As we go through these days of Advent  we too wish to be awake and vigilant, longing for God's coming and ready to sing our new song, for the wonders and love he works in and through our lives.

Nativity Prayer of St Augustine

Let the just rejoice, for their Justifier is born. Let the sick and infirm rejoice, for their Savior is born. Let the captives rejoice, for their Redeemer is born. Let slaves rejoice, for their Master is born. Let free men rejoice, for their Liberator is born. Let all Christians rejoice, for Jesus Christ is born. St Augustine of Hippo (AD 354-440)

Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer everyone. Col 4:6
