Set your life on firm foundations

Matthew 7:24

“Everyone who listens to these words of mine and acts on them, will be like a wise man who built his house on rock.”

Life with God can seem somewhat abstract. In our secular society, we are taught that science, fact, experiment, argument – these are the solid grounding on which we can form our views, make decisions and plan for the future. To set your life on God – outside of the physical, unseen, unmeasured, seems crazy.

But as we begin to prepare our hearts for Christmas, we meditate on the story of the Israelites setting their lives on the rock of the Lord amidst the shifting sands of the ancient Middle East. Their faith was rooted in the truth of the promise of God, and through many generations of trial and suffering it held. And God honoured the promise He made to the Israelites and sent them the promised Messiah. In fact, He exceeded His promise: the Messiah was the one promised to deliver the Jewish nation as prophesied in the Bible. But God went further – He sent as a deliverer His only Son; God made human – to bring the entire world, Jews and Gentiles alike, into the fullness of the love of God.

That promise applies to you today. That is a truth that amidst the shifting sands of culture, politics, scientific discovery, you can stake your life on.

Nativity Prayer of St Augustine

Let the just rejoice, for their Justifier is born. Let the sick and infirm rejoice, for their Savior is born. Let the captives rejoice, for their Redeemer is born. Let slaves rejoice, for their Master is born. Let free men rejoice, for their Liberator is born. Let all Christians rejoice, for Jesus Christ is born. St Augustine of Hippo (AD 354-440)

Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer everyone. Col 4:6
