Prayer for retirees
Retirement is a major upheaval. Some people look forward to it, while others dread it and don't want to see it happen. In all cases, it's a source of apprehension. Fear of boredom, of feeling useless, of finding oneself alone, of falling into inactivity or even fear of the new life as a couple, full-time, with one's partner... are legitimate and widely shared fears. The Lord can accompany us through this period of change, thanks to prayer. After having prayed for our worries at work, here is the beautiful prayer that the Mouvement Chrétien des Retraités (Christian Retirees' Movement) proposes to help us enter this new stage of our lives with a light heart.
"Father of all men, here we stand before you as we enter retirement. We thank you and bless you for yesterday's years, the years of work. Forgive us if we have made mistakes. In your love, correct them.
Teach us to regret only that we have not loved you enough, by not loving others as your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, has loved them.
We ask you to continue to guide us so that we may be present in today's society, active witnesses of your presence and love. We believe in the value of the human person, of every person, rich or poor, happy or suffering, strong or bedridden, young or old, because we know that you are the Father of all men and women, and that you welcome each and every one as your own child. Lord Jesus, we ask you to fill our days with your Risen presence. We now have a little more time to listen to your Word and to nourish ourselves with it. You who washed the feet of your apostles, teach us to be humble servants of our brothers and sisters, especially those who are in need.ers, especially those around us who suffer from illness or loneliness, our "elders" whom you love so dearly. Holy Spirit, make us welcoming to all, children, grandchildren, neighbors and friends. Make us the link between all generations, without judging those who do not live as we have lived. Help us to understand them. Teach us to face difficulties and tensions with lucidity, and to always be available, especially to those who say they don't believe in you. And above all, help us not to withdraw into ourselves, but to be ever attentive to others, those who go before us and those who follow. O God, Trinity of love, you are our Life. To you be glory, today and on the day we come to you. Amen."
